Is this normal ? Orange would not give me a Pac Code
I recently purchased a memorable number from Ebay. The number was on a Orange PAYT sim card. I registered the card in my name with out any problems. I called up today to get a PAC code so that I could transfer the number. The guy at retentions said that as it was such a memorable number he could not let me have the PAC code unless he was able to call me back on the number to confirm it was mine. That was going to be difficult as the sim is not in a phone at the moment. Failing that he said I could go to my nearest Orange store (about 25 miles away) and take proof that the number was mine. Has anyone ever heard such rubbish before ?

It's not rubbish, they are trying to ensure you only get a PAC code for a number you genuinely own and have access to. It's common sense really and prevents someone loosing out if you were trying to con them which they don't know because they don't know you.
I bought a memorable number on an Orange PAYG sim. To get the pac I had to register it in my name and set up security. I did this by putting it in a phone and going through the setup procedure and it took around 5 minutes maximum. It was worth it because I wanted the number. Once I had the details set Orange sent me the PAC code via the post within a few days (refused to give it over the phone). It then took 2 days to get the number transfered to my contract on another network. It's not the end of the world you have a few simple options, 1) Stick the sim in your phone and register it in your name 2) Go to the Orange store as suggested Option 1 appears to be the best for you at the moment, are you unable to do that? If your handset can't take an Orange sim don't you have any family or mates with a phone that will? (Most O2 handsets and most bought from carphonewarehouse and similar places tend to be able to take most sims as they aren't normally simlocked) |

Seems to me by the time you've created this thread and waited on a reply you could have done what lalaland has suggested and gotten the PAC by now.

The only problem was the sim was at home and I was away at work for a few days. Problem solved, I called up again this morning and this time they gave me the PAC code with out any problems. What annoyed me was I brought a special number for Mrs OB the other week. Once again a very nice number on Orange. They gave me the PAC code with out any problems again. So either they are supposed to check you own the number and most CSR dont or the CSR last night just did not want me to take the number away.

Just out of interest, why do you want a special number? Are you using for a business or personal? |

Sounds like a good CSR... You should be angry at yourself for calling up and not thinking they might not need you to prove or use the phone/receive a text.
Glad that they have done this and that my number which is also fairly memorable is safe. I transferred my number from Voda who didn't try to verify anything and it was registered in my girlfriends name may i add! |

Sounds like the person on the phone has done a good job, security is important. I never mind my bank or phone company verifying things for security. You could be on the wrong side of this one day and then you'll realise when your number gets snatched and causes you to lose service or calls etc

Surely giving the CS rep the SIM serial number should be enough? If someone took a guess and actually got the serial number and the number mapped to it right, i'd like them to choose my euro numbers this week!
Just as a heads up though, anyone wanting a 'personal' number might be able to get what they want for FREE on the Ikea Mobile website |

Job done. |

I dont mind account security. I just wish that CSR would sing from the same hymn sheet. One person wont, one will, its life I suppose. Very happy with the number lets just say it ends with 858585.
