Penalised for switching land line provider - main culprit BT
Apparently the practice of being charged a penalty fee when switching from one provide to another because of the 'rolling contract' is being referred to a commission.
The worst culprit unsurprisingly is BT. We have a contract with BT which gives a reduction on Land line and Broadband on a rolling contract, which means that if I choose to leave they will charge me full price for the past 12 months. It's a real sneaky way of keeping their customers. Hoping that the Commission doesn't take to long to outlaw this practice, as a the moment customers are bound into a contract that possibly they can never get out of, if they can't/don't want to pay. |

Although I hope they do outlaw these auto renewing contracts, your point isnt correct, they advise you in the month before the contract is 'renewed' that you can cancel without penalty, it seems pretty common though that the letter telling you that your contract is about to renew goes missing or comes after the contract is renewed .

I was landed with a hefty charge for switching from BT but I quoted back to them the letter that they had sent me confirming that I was 'out of contract' and had told them not to renew for another 12 months and they dropped the charges.
