Format for American Idol?
bossoftheworld

It's a while since I watched American Idol regularly (I was sick of Simon Cowell and it put me off) and can't remember the format of it.

Do they still have Big Band Week?

I used to love that bit.

The last time they had anything like that was Rat Pack week two years ago.

Boss - watch out for Rory MacGrath getting a 'ratpackage' makeover.

I can just imagine it!

I'm not keen on him anyway. In fact none of the guys are doing it for me this year. Out of all of them I think the cowboy guy is the nicest just he's so young and sweet.

With his hair cut back and dressed in a suit he'd look like Phil Mitchell making a court appearance.

I don't get the fuss over him either. If he's that great a musician he should have entered another show. As a singer and performer he's merely over the top for the sake of it.

Do you mean Scott McCreery? I think he has a lovely voice and delivery, even if his genre isn't my thing. I think Jacob is the best singer and I sort of like Paul for his quirkiness (and liked Brett for the same reason) but the other guys are little more than poor imitations of previous contestants.

Yes that's him (thanks just getting used to the names it will be easier now it's wittled down a bit).

Scott's voice is lovely for the type of music he sings but I think what I like about him is that he tries so hard to be a 'man' he's only 17 and I felt for him during Hollywood week when they got rid of the young kid.

You could tell he felt rotten for not sticking up for the young guy - but he's barely that much older.

It's hard for me with the guys though as I always remember Shane on X Factor singing 'Over the Rainbow' and 'Unchained Melody' and I don't find any guys have ever had that same tone or range since Shane.

It does depend a lot on what song they choose though.

I dreamt last night that Scott sang 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', (in a low register). He's only 15, so he coudn't sing 'ever I lay with you'. So they made him sing 'ever I played with you' instead.

Scott's 15 Hadn't seen his age but had him down as about 19. Mind you, still struggling with the fact Casey is 19

I don't think they'll be having anything like Big Band week - Uncle Nigel has already made comments that they won't be getting contestants to do genres they're completely unsuitable for, more concentrating on their strengths - which is all good IMO

Just found this apparently Scott is 16 (so he possibly could have been 15 at the auditions).

Didn't they have a big band-esque week last year, when Harry Connick Jr mentored?

So he can sing 'lay with you' now?

Depends on what he laid really. It could have been the dinner table.

Just reading back.

Actually that song, when I hard the guy on X Factor singing it - I didn't really think about the lay with you bit.

For me it was about seeing my child for the first time iykwim.

I guess they could really tweak the lyrics and just say something like 'first time ever I held your face/hand' something like that.

Yeah Matt and Scotty that would be so different they're so far apart on their scale it would be something worth listening to.
