sony tv and dogle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi I've just bought a sony internet tv and sony say you need to buy a dongle but I've read some reviews and some people say buy this below, my question is will this work better not as I'm unsure what to buy. Thanks in advance Daz.

I read the reviews especially regarding poor wireless reception and of course the fact this gadget is unique to Sony and therefore not reuseable. Instead I bought a Homeplug Solwise 85Mbps Homeplug Adapter - Twin Packsetup for around £40 from Amazon which effectively hardwires the Sony TV to the internet via ordinary electricity plug sockets behind the TV and adjacent to my router (all cables included), and it is superb - literally plug and go - 2 minutes tops to set it up. Worked first time and of course can be used with any future TV or gadget as it is not model or brand specific. And less money! It's a no-brainer in my view.

As chrisjr said in your other thread homeplugs should work quite well - you just need to make sure the wiring in the bedroom and downstairs are the same circuit.

Another option is to use a wireless bridge - ie a second router which connects wirelessly to your first. Put the bridge near the TV and just connect it to the tv with a short cable - should be around £30-40.

Goto AVForums and have a search in the blu-ray forums for the sony 370 blu-ray player threads - there's plenty of examples of people using homeplugs or a wireless bridge to do what you want. (Don't worry that they're talking about a blu-ray player - it uses the same Sony dongle so the solutions apply to you.)

Sorry if this sounds stupid but will I have to conect the Homeplugs straight into the wall or can I use a extension socket and there is only one plug next to the TV and yes I think they are on the same circuit.

My understanding is that home plugs work best when plugged directly into a wall socket but that is not to say you must (plugging into extensions etc. can increase interference)

You can get some home plugs which allow plugs to go into them but they are a bit more expensive - say £70

lets hope the ones I've ordered work on a extension or I will have to rethink it.

It makes no difference, I imagine probably most Homeplugs are connected via mains extensions (multiway ones).

They are really excellent devices, you may well find other uses for them as well once you have a pair (and you probably won't need it for the TV very often).
