Anybody think Apple could reinvent video calling from a landline with 'Face time'?

The Amstrad Emailer failed but could Apple reinvent it and make it good? Perhaps like you see in the films project it onto a large screen tv?

Most people just don't bother with video calls in everyday life. Many of us have had phones capable of doing it for many years. But other then office video conferencing it's always been a very niche area IMHO. Sure people do use Skype but a lot of that is computer to computer and often audio only.

I doubt it, video calling has a major problem not even Apple can overcome: vanity

Also people like to do other things while on the phone - watching TV, cooking, working, etc, - and you can't really do that on a video call, as if you're not looking at the other person you just come across as rude and disinterested. Not to mention it also makes the video part of it pointless.

I doubt it. Facetime is a gimmick, that wont catch on. As other posters have said, people tend to be doing other things whilst on the phone.

Video calling isn't exactly new infact it was about in 2003... see here. I don't know why Apple think they're the first to do everything.
