And any new inventions”

Yes, I was just about to post that the TV that niall posted and recommended isn't 3D ready, and I know that Sony at that price are 3D ready.

Some of those TV's given in this thread do have Freeview HD Tuner.

By the way, I thought that all those TV's had SD pictures anyway?

with £ 500 to spend you are limited in certain ways

we have given you the idea of what you need

forget 3 d with your budget , I cant really see it taking off just yet ................ it will take 2 to 3 years to get everyone to agree on formats

samsung 2010 glasses dont work with 2011 models for example

“ still have the analogue aerial plugged in even though I use Virgin Media cable, this gives me the opportunity to watch another channel if I want to while recording from cable, so to be honest I wouldn't be using free-view that much, however when I do view using the aerial the screen isn't in proper wide-screen mode, and if I make it cine screen some of the top and bottom is chopped, like I say it's handy if I need to view a different programme while recording another.”

So use the built in freeview tuner instead of the analogue, - Will give you more channels to watch while recording from cable and they (well most) will be in proper wide screen format - so no (less) chopped heads etc

If you use cable and will not use the Freeview tuner much don't waste money on a Freeview HD model. Take the opportunity to get a better screen for the same price. A reasonable 42" plasma should be well within budget. You can't future proof the TV but you can ensure it has enough connections so that you can plug new boxes in that will do what you want (youview, sat etc.)
