Samsung LCD TV dead - what to do
RAINBOWGIRL22

Posted this is advice already

3 year old Samsung LCD died yesterday.

We still get full sound but the picture has totally gone (have checked all cables etc...)

It's not covered by insurance and out of warranty?

Is it worth getting someone to look at it? Or should we just buy a new one? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Apparently engineers can't get any spare parts for Samsung TV's after they are about 18 months old so their TV's are usually written off as unrepairable. If you had extended warranty you may well have got a new TV out of it.

Highly recommend getting TV's from a place that does 5 year warranty like John Lewis.

Fully agree, if you buy a Samsung or LG make sure you get a five year warranty.

Other threads on DS give Samsung parts dried up after 18 months.

Not worth the hassle of repair, you may well be told no parts after paying for a look see.

Thanks - new TV has arrived and I have purchased a warranty (only 3 years though)

Would it be worth maybe buying a separate 5 year warranty? and can I even do this?

did you get the out dated Samsung or the LG updated with Freeview HD ?

A TV is expected to last longer than 3 years. The Sale of Goods Act gives you some protection for 6 years. I would be looking at getting half the purchase price back from the retailer or an equivalent amount off the price of a new TV from him.

The manufacturers warranty is a useful addition to your legal rights but does not replace them. The same of course applies to the 3 year warranty you have just wasted money on. Bought additional warranties are not worth it on average, they are just a money making scam.

99% of times when an LCD tv has no picture at all, it is the backlights not working. Usually that's a faulty inverter board, and usually repairable.

The only question becomes the repair cost, and if that exceeds the value of the tv.

Does the picture flash up briefly at power up, or is there no sign of life whatsoever?

What's the exact model number of the set?

Are you at all handy with a screwdriver? might be worth a punt buying a replacement inverter board(s) and just try swapping them.

If you shine a torch on the screen when you can hear a sound but no picture can you see a really dark image?
if this is the case then as prodave said its prob the backlight which is fixable and usually fairly cheap to have repaired.
