This seems too good to be true when compared with contract plans of other carriers.”

Yes that's correct.

Although apparently Three have yet to implement it within their system so you can't actually buy it yet!

But as "chaos77" says a few posts back Three have stated in a blog(!) that as long as a person tops-up with the £15 they will automatically get the unlimited data deal/texts/minutes.

And I agree it does seem too good to be true. I think the £15 deal will eventually be capped and the £25 deal will be the only one to offer true unlimited data.

Possibly true to an extent.

It's weird, how over the years, people have stuck with quite inadequate and pricier competitors for their data.

The only catch with 3's unlimited data is that they have network-wide traffic management in heavy use areas, which is considerably more sophisticated than the other networks. If you want to set up a torrent manager on your phone and download 24/7 you can, and in most areas you'll see speeds of 2-3Mbit/s at all times.

Traffic management is a necessary evil these days, precisely because of the high usage from so many users.

It't people that download crazy amounts of data/setup torrent managers etc ruin it for the rest of us.

To quote Jeff Goldblum, such people are "so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should".

Shame it's the three network!

Spoken by someone who obviously hasn't used the network in the last few years, or ever. The largest 3G network by miles (albeit now shared with T-Mobile and soon Orange), high-speed data and spare capacity.

Yes, it's a real shame it's the Three network!!

I've been with Three for over two years now and it's one of the best network's I've been for coverage and data speeds.

Without a doubt they also do the best deals around too.

I quite agree, to be fair on 3, on the same page that they advertise this new addon, they have a link for free SIMs, get one, stick fifteen quid in it and try it for a month, i would genuinely love to hear your opinion of 3 then!

A friend of mine recently did this and he gets full signal with Three where Orange only managed around half that. He also has a download speed which jumped from 1.5meg with Orange, to 3.5meg with Three! I have a simcard but i cannot use it yet as their website isn't letting me register a card to topup and i haven't had chance to get to a shop yet to top up.

been on 3 for 5 months so far with iphone 4 and not had any issues with it but i came from a 6300 on orange to a 3g iphone 4 so dont know how orange compared in my area for 3g data.

just get a free sim and try it out, then go contract with them or stay pay as you go

The problem for Three is that they're always trying to shake up the industry, but the industry (bar a few MVNOs) isn't really bothered about competing with Three. The fact is, if a network can impose data limits and charge loads for additional data, why not do it? That's the thinking for the big boys, it seems.

Three has some amazing tariffs. Their One Plan has already banked on changes to mobile termination rates, giving loads more off-net minutes, as well as unlimited data, loads of texts, Skype etc.. but it didn't start a price war.

Instead the big networks are just hoping that Three eventually runs out of money and pulls out of the UK, or is bought out.

I really hope Three can survive, but they do have this problem where loads of people seem to think they're no good, based on assumptions from the early days when they weren't any good!

That reputation has stuck for so many people that they're too scared to take the risk, but why wouldn't you at least try it for a month given they have vastly superior coverage to the likes of Vodafone and O2.

Im on o2 pay as you go web n text for £10 which gives me free texts and unlimited web which i use to listen to internet radio in the car on my iphone, however if i switch to this 3 plan for £15, i`ll get 3000txts and unlimited web for my internet radio plus will skype work on iphone for free calls?
i can get viber on the iphone but needs wifi to work and can only call other viber/iphone users who are within a wifi area.

I agree - you might as well be talking to a brick wall for all the good it seems to do!

Question:

Is tethering still enabled on an iPhone with 3's PAYG?

So I just successfully unlocked my HTC HD7 to try it out with 3 because I felt a bit hamstrung with Giffgaff (Giffgaff's best speeds - same as O2 - seem to be around 400-500Kbps even with 5 bars of HSDPA signal).

3 does seem a bit snappier on the browsing but downloading a song from the marketplace wasn't that quick. I think it's because there's no phorm-type stuff on 3 which there is on O2.

Update: the above opinion does seem a bit premature. Will re-post in a couple of days to see coverage etc.

Because in many cities Vodafone has equally good 3G coverage and it's also the UKs fastest currently offering up to 7.2Mbs.

02 & Vodafone now have the facility to use 900Mhz for 3G which will give them a huge advantage as this lower frequency range is far more robust for data use than the 2100Mhz currently used for 3G.

The fact is that 3 can only hope to compete on price and if that gets squeezed too tightly they will have not have a viable business.

All you can eat data is a good offer but it's probably not the big issue for most smartphone users that 3 would like to think it is.

It depends, just using my smartphone on giffgaff I found that my previous month's usage was approx just under 500MB. I made a personal hotspot last night and used up almost 50MB within ten minutes.

It really depends on what happens in the spectrum allocation that OfCom do. 3 needs to get some sub-1GHz spectrum.

02 and Vodafone can use their 900Mhz now for 3G. It will be at least 2-3 years before any operators get 850Mhz up and running and that frequency range will probably be used for LTE (4G).

Data is by no means the biggest revenue generator for mobile networks yet. For a long time to come voice and text will remain the big earners.
