Hey guys, my phone's available for upgrade but I haven't bothered cos I simply haven't decided what phone I want to upgrade to. I was thinking about the iPhone 4 but with the iPhone 5 coming out in May (last I heard), would I be able to upgrade to an iPhone 4 now (on Orange) and upgrade it to an iPhone 5 when it comes out? I realise there'll be a cost.

I dunno whether to just keep my crappy Blackberry until my contract ends in June and get the iPhone 5 on a different network cos Orange's tarrifs are rubbish!

They won't let you upgrade twice unless you manage to convince them to let you pay off the whole of the remaining balance - which will be a lot. Best bet is to either wait for the iPhone 5 (which will be out mid-June most probably, not May) or upgrade to the iPhone 4 now, get some hardcore protective cover for it (like an Otterbox or Trident Case) and then sell it when the iPhone 5 is released, buying the iPhone 5 on SIM free.

I recommend waiting - it's less risk, as you can't guarantee the price of the iPhone 4 wont crash when the new one is announced, even though this seems highly unlikely.

This will be possible, but the 'cost' that your speak of will be the rest of the contract you are on now to upgrade to iPhone 4 and then the rest of the contract you have taken out to get the iPhone for when you want the iPhone 5... (in June this will amount to 24 or 18 months of a further commitment at the price plan you take as your remaining term would be added on if they let you upgrade now) which will be hundreds of pounds!

I'm not even sure if they still allow you to upgrade so early! I know it used to be when you were in the last 3 months of your contract, have you checked this is still the case? Either way it will be added on to your new contract, so there isn't much point.

Much better to wait until the contract expires I would say!

You could buy the iPhone outright now if you have a spare 500 pounds (minus whatever you can get for the Blackberry I guess). You could then sell that if and when you want to upgrade to iPhone 5. Your loss then will be the difference between what you pay for the iPhone 4 now and what is it worth then. Probably a cost of £200 to £250 (maybe even less if you keep it in good condition).

This would mean you were free to leave Orange in June if you wanted to and, if you decided you were happy with the iPhone 4, could get on a very cheap sim-only deal of around £10 per month (inc internet).

If you don't have the cash to buy now, you could upgrade and considering selling in the summer, but you will be tied in to Orange for probably 27 months!

i would wait until the new iphone is out, if thats the phone you want as it seems a lot to spend to get an iphone 4 now and then go for the latest.

i have the iphone 4 and wish i hadn't got the phone but going to stick with it until next october.

the iphone 4 doesn't do flash websites by the way if you want to view them.

Yeah you can, I had a call from Orange yesterday asking if I knew that I was able to upgrade my phone but I chose not to.

I didn't realise there was the whole paying to end the contract, I thought you'd just be able to pay to upgrade the handset, you can with every other phone I've had with Orange. I think I'll just wait for the iPhone 5 to come out and put up with my BB (8520 ) for now, thanks anyway!

Does it have to be the iphone?! I was adament I wanted one but then realised it'll be out of date within 6 months. So I bought the LG Optimus One. Great phone.

LG Optimus One? That was out of date before it was even released! I kid of course, but I wouldn't use obsolescence as a reason not to buy a phone. Cutting edge hardware these days is still at least a year ahead of software (as has been the way with PCs for a while), so whatever phone you get will last you easily to the end of your contract.

iPhones are released every 12 months, not every 6. And your LG Optimus One is already out of date.

They usually come out at the end of June if I recall correctly.

Here they are

1) This is a general point about how Apple are usually right: They are the driving force behind so many advances which includes adopting new and abandoning old tech. Everyone says it's stupid for a few years before ending up copying Apple. Adoption of the mouse and GUI interface... Anyone? Abandoning of floppy drive? launch of iPad? Abandoning of CD Drive?

2) It makes browsing any website on a mobile a waste of time unless on 3G or WiFi due to loading times.

3) It is last decade's tech and soon to be pretty much completely replaced by HTML5.

4) It is buggy and the cause for most browser crashes on PCs and Macs.

5) It's full of security holes.

6) It's mostly used to display intrusive ads.

7) Most flash games can't be played on phones due to lack of relevant I/O and most phones lack the power anyway.

8) I can't think of any reason why you would need to use flash urgently on a phone, rather than wait until you get to a PC.

9) It murders battery life.

10) It's not really needed any more for video content due to HTML5.

Flash has more uses than just games. Modern phones like Desire HD are more than capable power wise...


This could be said of mobiles. Why cant you wait until you get home to make a phone call.


So do colour screens...why not stick to the old LCD displays? Extra features, will always require extra juice.

Back on topic, O2 did allow customers to upgrade to iPhone 4 even if they were within contract when it was released at the reduced (though not in everyone's case) cost of £20 per month remaining on the contract

Of course there is no guarantee that O2 will make the same offer again when iPhone 5 is released nor any guarantee that any of the other networks, such as orange in the OPs case, will make a similar offer

wait and look at some other phones as the samsung galaxy s 2, htc desire s, lg optimus 3d are out in the next few months or even the htc desire hd which is a great phone and wish I had got that over iphone 4.

the iphone is annoying lots of things are restricted on it bluetooth, cant use songs on it as ringtones, annoying itunes software list goes on.

You can do this through iTunes-you need to google how to do it, it's quite easy but I can't remember all the steps off hand (tired and need my bed).

That's your opinion. If the OP wants an iPhone, then let them get one. No-ones making you have one. Just because it isn't the right phone for you, doesn't mean it isn't the right phone for them!

1) Set iTunes to import as '.aac'.
2) Import an mp3 track into iTunes and right click and select 'convert to aac'
3) Locate the '.m4a' file created and rename it '.m4r'.
4) Import the '.m4r' file to iTunes and it will be detected as a ringtone.

The floppy drive dying off was a natural progression of tech as the floppy was to small to handle the ever increasing amounts of data. Certainly wasn't apple that called that lol

As far as i know the cd/dvd drive hasn't disappeared anywhere and apply still use them on all but one of their laptops.

Not really. There's still a hell of a lot you can do with Flash that you can't do with HTML5, plus there's a ton of back-end stuff that marketers and web designers need from Flash that HTML5 just isn't concerned with. Adobe are just looking for new ways to put banner ads all over the place, not the most exciting development of all time.

Though the burning question in my mind, is what cost are our lovely network providers really going to charge for the new iphone for upgrades.

Theres bound to be some extra hidden data charges in there.
