I pads are too expensive for most of the stuff you can do on a computer IMO. Get yourself a netbook to take around with you its cheeper.

Netbook is just a small laptop.

Tablet PC's are the future.

Agreed, I think the netbook fad was just a craze in 2009, I never see them about any more and the hype certainly has gone, everyone is all about tablets in 2011.

If that is the case why buy a legacy one such as an Ipad 1. Surely if you believe that you would want up to date items such as an Ipad2.

I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an iPad 1 now, we are meaning the iPad 2.

I am certainly not gone to buy one. I hate the look of them and a computer can do everything a tablet can. There rubbish.

He has made clear in his posts that he is buying the legacy device aka Ipad 1.

Each to their own, I find netbooks to small and fiddly (at the smaller end of the scale) and the bigger ones getting up to 10-12" I'd rather just use a proper laptop. Something like the iPad is not really a "computer", it's a "post-PC device" a simple way to immerse yourself in content such as web/video etc. without the traditional hassles of computers.

If I buy a netbook, I'm using a small fiddly keyboard, squinting at the small screen (gaming on a netbook is horrible)I still have to install Windows updates, install virus/malware protection, wait for it to boot up etc. Or I can grab my iPad off the coffee table and be surfing the web in half a second.

Of course I have a Macbook and iMac for when I need the functions of a computer, but the iPad is not meant to be a computer replacement, it's got different uses.

Well his choice I guess, I wouldn't advice anyone to buy an original gen iPad over a second gen though.

I thought it does have access to the market??? Yes its got a poorer screen and build quality, thats where it makes its saving and sells for £200 less than the ipad.

I have a Desire HD which I rooted, a very simple process. I also had a Desire. Rooting it this was even easier. I dont own a tablet, so cant say how difficult rooting one is. I cant see it being that difficult to be honest.

For its price its a very good piece of kit. Would I buy one, probably not. I would rather spend a bit more money and get a decent one.

Why? It was only released May 2010 and it was even criticised at the time ss being outdated.

You can go on about processor speed but seemly only noticeable doing big tasks. I upgraded from sn IPod Touch 3G to IPhone 4 and you can notice the retina display.

iPad 2 is not s big update hence why many are holding off for the IPad 3. I'm likely to upgrade to the IPhone 5 and simply can't afford another £450 for the IPad 2 and £500 for the phone. I got the IPad 1 for £294 and thats the chespest I have ever seen one and does for the odd bit of browsing. I'm more into my iPhones.

Just to add all the cheper iPad 1's sold out within 2 days so a lot must feel its better value than £450+ probably more for a 3G one.

The main reason is because the Apple ecosystem moves so fast. I have a first gen iPod touch from 2008, by 2010 it was virtually unusable as it can't run iOS 4. Pretty much all apps on the Appstore now need iOS4 and won't work with my original iPod touch. Same with the first iPhone, pretty much nothing on the appstore today works on it.

So with Apple, particularly the iOS range of products, it's a case of upgrade or be left behind. It's likely iOS 5 won't run on the iPad 1, so chances are no apps will run on it in 12-18 months from now.

I disagree.

I actually think Apple support products pretty well it's only recently they are stopping Iphone 3G updates is it not?

I'd expect a full 2 years of updates for Ipad 1. I still get updates for my Ipod touch 3G. The thing is if they advance with iOS5 they will probably update only what Ipad 1 can cope with. Apple never gave the Ipod touch 3G wallpapers on the desktop and many other Iphone features it took them ages to add Flight Mode.

And to be honest any Apple first generation stuff has probably been well used and you can upgrade an Ipod touch quite cheap some good deals online. But after three years of support I don't see the issue? Just continue to use existing apps.

Other phones/MP3 players go out dated within 12 months. A bit like Apple but most people hold onto Apple stuff and get continued software updates. Holds it's value second hand too you can still get a few hundred pounds for an Iphone 3GS.

Just going by my experience of my iPod touch first gen, after two years hardly anything worked, same with my iPhone 2G too, but not really an issue for me as I upgrade every year anyway. I think the 3G is an exception rather than the standard to the rule.

But you'd get an extra year or so out of buying an iPad 2 now than a first one, that much is pretty much guaranteed, it will have a longer life-span from now. Agree about the second hand value though, they hold their price very well.

Ipad 1 still has another year though. Buy Ipad 2 and you are getting 2/3 years from now.

I won't rule out buyign the Ipad 2 if the price is right. It won't be at release though. I'll be investing in the Iphone 5 first though.

Oh I'm sure it does, you were just asking why I'd advice someone to buy an iPad 2 over an iPad 1 given the choice, this is my main reason. The iPad 1 is still great, but you'll get longer out of an iPad 2 now.

Ideally I'd have the Ipad 2 3G model but no idea what price that is. The Wi-fi models are limited to hotspots where I could use a 3G one anywhere.

I think Ipad 3 will be the finished article with Retnta display hopefully.

iPad 3 will probably have a higher resolution, doubt it'll be "retina" standard though, as that means it would be a 2048x1536 10" display! I can't imagine anything higher than even 1080p on a 10" screen, and developers would struggle to make apps in such high resolution.

I fully expect it to support "full HD" next year though.

RE: the 3g/wifi, if you have an iPhone, the new iOS 4.3 update will allow you to tether using wifi hotspot feature. Obviously it'll come off your iPhone data allowance though.

Depends on your network. Some like O2 block the Personal Hotspot feature and you have to buy a bolt on to enable it - just like USB and Bluetooth tethering. At least that's how it is currently on the GM beta of iOS 4.3. Interestingly '3' don't block it and you can use it without a bolt-on.

To be honest any tablet released now, costing £350+ should support full HD...if it doesnt its failing in my view.

Why on earth would the iPAd 3 need a 2048x1536 display when even the Macbook Pro uses a simple 1280 by 800 panel?

A 9.7" iPad 2 'Retina' display always seemed immensely bizarre speculation, but for the fact that 'Apple thinks different'.

Because the buzzword caught on, now every bloody thing has to have it, whether it makes sense or not. And it is a reason to throw away your current tablet and get the latest.

I don't see that happening TBH. Hopefully 1080p on the iPad 3 will be enough.

Nope, no Android Market or normal Google apps unless you root it or install a custom ROM. Apparently it doesn't meet Google's requirements due to the lack of a Home button and 3G.

It's mentioned in the reviews I linked to, and also this thread here at DS:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1444594

As I said though, it's good for the price.

Rooting or installing a custom ROM doesn't sound too difficult to me either, but it's not something the average user is likely to know about or be comfortable with, which is a shame as it seems the stock version of the Vega is a bit limited.

Like you, I'd rather pay more though for a better quality tablet. In my case, that'll be the iPad 2, but if I had an Android phone, and/or it was cheaper, I'd give the Xoom serious consideration.

Going with that resolution is the easiest option as it's a straight doubling in each direction of the original 1024 × 768 resolution, making it simpler for anything aimed at the old resolution to be scaled up.
