Old School Hip Hop
Don't get me wrong, I like new hip hop, autotune and dance beats included, but does anyone miss some of the old Tupac/Biggie style sound ala http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNrjQZUflo
And would Pac or Biggie be relevant today? |

This a discussion I have a lot with my hip-hop mad boyfriend. I personally think that alot of artists who are known as 'rap' and 'hip-hop' artists dont actually have the credentials to be considered in those genres, It actually drives me mad when I watch award shows and Niki Minaj is best hip-hop (NO SHES NOT) ahem sorry I also have an issue with Sean 'dutty ey' Paul winning best dancehall
Now ive got that off my chest. I always wonder if Biggie and Tupac were still alive today would it be a case of 1) Those above mentioned artists wouldn't have even been considered as they have nowhere near the greatness of Tupac or Biggie 2) Would Tupac and Biggie if still alive would have to change their style and be accessible to a larger audience i.e the drakes and little waynes to reach the same levels of success as they had back then. |

I'd like to think they wouldn't have sold out and teamed up with Guetta etc in order to sell more records and sound more mainstream

My sentiments exactly to be honest I was never a huge hip hop fan growing up, but as I have been introduced to it more and heard the original lyrical style of many of the 'mainstream' artists we hear today, its more than obvious that alot of them have 'changed' to be more popular. I agree alot of artists that pass as hip hop and rap artists are a real insult. Ive read recently that 2012 is being hailed as the return of real hip hop, I really hope this is the case.
