Choose between the HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S or ( maybe the HTC Desire HD ).

This would be my first smartphone.

Thanks.

The Desire is the best IMHO

The Desire HD has a smaller battery than the Desire and I've known people have problems with sim/memory card cover coming loose on the Desire HD.

The Galaxy S is very light and has the best screen out of the three, but the Android OS is not as slick as on the Desire.

Can the Desire be updated to the new Android OS...2.3 Gingerbread?

A quick google seems to suggest it is indeed.

When is Gingerbread out?

Will all phone manf. release the update on the same day to upgrade your phone?

nope

it all depends on when the mfr can be bothered to doctor it up for their specific handsets, if at all.

There IS always the option to root and flash a custom ROM on your phone so you always have the latest version of Android on there.

Yeah I don't like Samsung's UI customisations. HTC's Sense UI seems much more intuitive
