Panasonic DVD recorder DMR-EX85 - No Freeview at all.

Hi all.

I got this DVD recorder second hand from a local British Heart Foundation branch today, and I've tried setting it up (it'll be a great space saver!)

The instruction manual that came with this DVD recorder suggests that it has in-built Freeview. Yet I find absolutely diddledy squat of Freeview on it.

I've tried tuning it. It picks up analogue fine, but zilch of Freeview. it scans and finds nothing. The same aerial connection was tried on an el-cheapo Agora AEAGO08 Freeview box, and that picks up all channels absolutely fine. This Panny also picks up analogue fine, but nothing of Freeview.

Secondly, I can't find a way of switching from analogue to digital and back.

Can anyone help me?

hi, i don't own one of these but downloaded a copy of the manual http://andymedia.110mb.com/manuals/DMREX75-85.pdf and page 19 shows both analogue and digital channels on the same guide, so selecting 'tv guide' should show all channels. looking around various message boards it seems this unit requires a very strong signal, have you tried a booster. hope this helps

No it doesn't switch analogue to digital or back. It doesn't even list any digital channels, it's stuck in analogue mode for the moment.

if you look at page 19

it says that analogue channels have an A after them, displayed like this ( A )

what channels can you see

page 24 shows what you should see

top right corner should show DVB

All the channels listed have (A)s after them. Just the five analogue channels, BBC1-C5

No, I only see the analogue OSD. A black box with the channel number, station name and the recording format it is set to (SD card/HDD/DVDR). This is in the top-right corner of the screen.

There is "all services - change category" with a blue rectangle to signify "press blue" in the bottom right. When I do this, it changes to "free TV" but still only shows just the 5 analogue channels.

page 44 shows you how to do DVB tuning

FUNCTIONS then ADD NEW DVB SERVICES

it seems to me if you choose download from TV then its analogue only

even if you have Q link

page 53 shows how to reset the whole machine

I've tried that countless times since yesterday, and tried re-setting as well. All to no avail

also page 11 shows 1 DVB SET UP

is ACTIVE ANTENNA switched on/off ?

Incidentally on page 44, it details the "signal condition" option under the "add new DVB services" option. The "signal condition" option is greyed out while the "add new DVB services" option works.

I still see nothing to do with "active antenna" on page 11.

my G 20 Panny telly has a very sensitive tuner built in

I have tried Satellite Quality cable straight from wall socket to TV and the only cable that works is a discontinued cable from the manufactor above.

I am not a big fan of expensive cables , but it certainly works this time. I think I paid £ 20 which is a fortune for me

I collect old TVs, my TV is RF-only. To modulate the SCART signal to RF it is being passed through a Panasonic NV-F55 VCR. the aerial is plugged directly into the DVD recorder, straight from the wall from the rooftop aerial and nothing else is inbetween the aerial and the DVD recorder.

I'm increasingly suspecting that the DVD recorder is faulty/broken.

DVB Auto Setup
Depending on different countries or regions, the digital TV programme has its own
selection of operating frequency channels, frequency bands, transmission
parameters and frequencies, The unit automatically searches for all available digital
television stations.
Active Antenna
If an active aerial is connected to the unit, no station was found during auto setup.
Switch [Active Antenna] to [On] in the [Setup] menu.
Then repeat the auto setup. After the auto setup, you can check the signal
attributes in the [Setup] menu.

page 11 PLEASE NOTE IT IS NOT 01 /12 2006 , it is April

I have followed those ones and now discovered, after doing a little more research, that there are two versions of the English instruction manual for this model because there are two different versions of this model of DVD recorder.

The English for Mainland Europe one has active antenna. The English for UK one doesn't have active antenna.

"Active Antenna" s not mentioned in the instruction book, nor is it anywhere in the setup menu on mine.

My suspicions are correct. It's broken.

A little more research says it's a 10uF capacitor within the DVD recorder cutting off power to the Freeview section.

I thought Panasonic would have the sense to not use crapacitors?
