Is there anything I can do myself or will I need a BT Engineer to fit a new one? (and if I do will they charge or do it for free?)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
What sort of main socket do you have? is it the type where you can remove 2 screws and the bottom half will be able to be unplugged?
If it is this type you can either do the job yourself or use a local electrician to do the job.
BT would do it but it would cost around £130 for the visit

If you have enough free cable just use a connector block (BT call it a 77A) to connect the three pairs of wires at the break. (Blue & White to Blue & White, White & Blue to Blue & White, etc.) You don't need all three pairs but it makes a neater job.
