I recently got a large 30" multipurpose TV/monitor for my PC. Whilst the size, especially in the small room, makes it great fun for gaming, so far I haven't been able to get the settings (brightness, contrast etc) quite right. I find it tends to glare on white screens but if I decrease the contrast I find it too dark to see things clearly in darker scenes (e.g. night time in games). Furthermore, the screen suffers very badly from screen burn (think this is image retention on LCDs) and I think the high contrast setting is making the screen burn worse. So I need to find the lowest possible contrast / brightness setting to avoid glare and screen burn yet still need to actually be able to see dark scenes too.

So basically I need to know if there are any applications, or even just websites to help me set up my monitor properly? You know the kind of thing where you can check it is displaying all the levels of grey correctly between white and black and the colour levels too, perhaps with some test images to check I got it right.
