The Ratings Thread (Part 18)
Quote:
Possibly for a season opener, but it is by no means its lowest rating ever.
It's pretty much bang on what I expected - around 6m - due to the BSI scheduling decision to start it midway through a popular competing ITV drama. Yes, I know South Riding debuted to a slightly better 6.6m in the same slot, but it also benefitted from a Top Gear lead-in on the hour (if you see what I mean, "junctions-wise"), and then fell away once TG finished its run. It was also a new drama, not one in its 9th series, which had already seen a sizeable reduction in its audience from its peak. I do think WTD could have been better served by a Monday/Tuesday slot, or waiting until DOI/WAH had finished. But it should timeshift OK, and get a mid to high 6m figure. Decent enough. |

Phone Booth bombed massively. What an awful rating! ITV3 probably wasn't far off beating Channel 5 in primetime because of this.
Channel 5 really messed up in airing this movie in a 9pm slot when it was last shown on Channel 4 as recently as October 2010 and on Film4 as recently as last month! In fact, the Channel 4 group of channels have aired this movie 7 times since May last year, and only one of those was a 9pm airing. What were Channel 5 thinking? In any case, I guess the earlier family movie The Mask must have performed well and spared their blushes a bit because the primetime share of 3.7% according to DS, whilst still low for Channel 5's standards, is not as bad as it could have been when the share at 8pm was 2.8% before falling to 2.3% at 9pm. |

Is anyone else having trouble retrieving Broadcast articles in the usual way today? Either Google is in a particularly unhelpful mood, or they have removed themselves from the search engine.

Very strong audience interest in #Japan coverage on Friday: #bbcnews channel reach 8.5m - a record daily audience. (sky 5.8m).
http://twitter.com/#!/kevinbakhurstBrilliant figure for the BBC NC. I think that is close to a record daily reach for Sky aswell, higher than the 5.4m on the day of the Leaders Debate. |

Superb afternoon rugby figure, on a glorious early spring day too!
6.3m!! ![]() More than twice what the FA Cup quarter final got! ![]() or whether it would banished to ITV4?The FA Cup for ITV has effectively been like a single contract affair. Following Man Utd at every stage with I imagine an almost irritating requirement to show another team. I guess its hard to blame them with the figures that are thrown up-United get a substantial number of viewers tuning in hoping they will lose. It certainly isnt because of the flair of their play-rare moments aside, this team is one of the blandest and workmanlike Utd elevens I can remember. Shows how important Utd getting through is for ITV though, going out to Leeds last year was a bit of a disaster. |

Low for Waking the Dead especially as it has been long anticipated. I think the show works better on Monday/Tuesday. It's not really a Sunday show and I wonder whether trailing it so heavily as 'the final series' may have put off the casual viewer.

Agreed. Its unfortunate that next weeks "Super Saturday" has Englands slam attempt at tea-time rather than at 7.45. The evening game is likely to be meaningless, involve a non-British nation and bring the crescendo of "BBC sports mad" complaints to its highest. I wonder if it was on ITV whether the fixtures would be altered
or whether it would banished to ITV4? |

Last night excluded, there's little evidence to support your theory that it's not really a Sunday show. Indeed, series 6 which aired Sun/Mon in early 2007 averaged 7.5m in the officials. Series 7 which aired in spring 2008 on Mon/Tue averaged 6.66m. You could argue this might be more to do with the time of year as Series 6 aired in winter and series 7 in the spring, but personally I am not seeing any pattern in the data which suggests that Mondays and Tuesdays work better for it as a rule. In the case of this particular series it may have done better on Mondays and Tuesdays purely because of the strength of ITV1's current offering on Sundays. But hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the BBC were probably encouraged enough by the performance of South Riding on Sundays to schedule it there. Not dreadful for WTD by any means, but for its standards low. And the BBC, as well as commentators on this thread including myself, appear to have overestimated its popularity. For the record, the average DSRPG prediction was 6.6m. |

Rating of the day must be the Rugby. That is a fantastic figure when coverage started at 2:30pm on a reasonably pleasant day. Not far off the Man Utd vs Arsenal game too and that started at 16:45!
Just about OK for Waking The Dead, I expected a bit higher but with timeshift and weaker competiton in coming weeks it should improve. |

I'm not sure how much weight that argument carries when the majority of Waking The Dead's run has been on Sundays & Mondays. Only for series 1, 2 and 7 did the show run on Mondays & Tuesdays. Series 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and now 9 have aired Sun/Mon. The fact is it has enjoyed massive success on Sundays & Mondays before, so we can't use that as an excuse for last night's below par performance.
![]() I suppose it shows the BBC are right to call it a day. |

The Big Bang Theory is doing excellent numbers in its new Saturday night slot on E4. 423,000 watched the second of the two Season 1 repeats The Luminous Fish Effect over the weekend including +1. In comparison Glory Daze, which replaced it in the more high profile Thursday night slot pulled in 415,000 viewers for its latest (brand new) episode.
Also notable on the C4 digitals over the weekend, a screening of Double Jeopardy secured Film4's biggest audience of 2011 so far with 801,000 viewers including +1. Source: C4 Sales. |

http://www.barb.co.uk/report/weeklyV...D=201102060127 Sky1 has come on leaps and bounds since Feb 1 and the EPG change. I wonder if now that all viewers HD/SD get it on the same channel number, more HD viewers are being picked up? It's the same with Sky Living. 7m+ reach now every week, barely got to 6m before the EPG changed. |
