Boy oh boy. You wouldn't want to be a programmer or scheduler at Nine these days would you? They billed it "the year of comedy" but these numbers are no laughing matter.

It's just been one awful result after another lately. All the new comedy has flopped and some like the Ben Elton series rated so badly it had to be pulled, their previous highest rated show Two and a Half Men has ended with its popularity collapsing to such an extent the reruns had to be pulled from its regular 7pm timeslot, and even the non-comedy stuff like Million Dollar Drop isn't catching on.

Now to see Top Gear rate lower than it did when it was on SBS, rerun or otherwise, is just shocking.

I think Nine are in big big trouble as it's only going to get harder to dig themselves out of this hole with MasterChef back on Ten in a few weeks time.

Nine seems to be struggling big time, Underbelly isn't a ratings hit compared Seven's dramas and they can't seem to find a format that works. Ten has Masterchef but I would say Seven has the most stable and strongest schedule throughout.

I notice Seven are to air Downton Abbey, wonder if Nine or ABC will pick Upstairs Downstairs?

I forgot about Underbelly! Definitely one jewel in their crown. But the numbers for the recent Underbelly movie trilogy were very disappointing I thought and indicated to me that maybe it has peaked?

Seven is certainly stronger in the drama department, and pretty much every other department for that matter. News and current affairs is one area where Nine is still competitive - with 60 Minutes making a comeback in the Sunday ratings recently - but the main news bulletins and A Current Affair lag behind their Seven rivals and have done for some time now. Even the introduction of ACA to weekends has not helped close the gap much.

Good news that Seven have got Downton Abbey. I think it will rate really well for them.

The next Underbelly is set in the 20s which should be interesting, they're running out of real life incidents to adapt.

Sunrise does better than Today although I think Today is stronger in Melbourne and Sydney whereas Sunrise trumps it in other cities.

Dowton Abbey should be a hit, it's done well in America when it aired on Masterpiece/PBS although Masterpiece also produced Upstairs Downstairs.

With regard to whether there is 'non TV' in the numbers I would say no, that should not be the case anymore due to the way they capture viewing for measurement (either through the service information code from the Sky box itself or via audio matching) and then the subsequent processing steps it takes to decide what is TV and what is not.
In relation to your not adding to 100%, I can only assume this might either be because you are not going down to enough decimal places or the fact you are adding % together which will incurr rounding errors. BARB calculate 'Other non reported channels' as a residual of Total TV minus all the reported channels so it must add up to 100% if you see what I mean, but you may need to go down to a lower decimal level for this (not on the BARB website).

David Jason returns to BBC One in new comedy The Royal Bodyguard:
Quote:
“David Jason is to star in a brand new BBC One comedy series for the first time in 20 years, since the last series of Only Fools And Horses.

Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One and Cheryl Taylor, Controller, Comedy Commissioning, have commissioned The Royal Bodyguard from Hat Trick Productions, written by Mark Bussell and Justin Sbresni, creators of The Worst Week Of My Life, which will go into production in July.

Danny Cohen comments: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome David Jason back to a leading comedy role on BBC One. David is a hugely talented performer and much loved by British viewers. When I read the script I knew he would be perfect for this role."

David Jason (Touch Of Frost, Only Fools And Horses, Open All Hours) plays Captain Guy Hubble, a lifelong soldier coming up for retirement who has recently been put in charge of Royal security. An ex-guardsman who saw action in Cyprus and Northern Ireland, he sounds perfect for the job.

Unfortunately, he turns out to be the worst possible appointment as he is totally out of his depth. He should never have got the job, having previously worked in the car park at Buckingham Palace, but owing to a terrible misunderstanding, he's been promoted with the Queen's blessing to this important role. Now the fate of the Royal Family is in the hands of this walking disaster as he supervises security arrangements for all their engagements.

David Jason says: "I am really looking forward to working with the very talented producer Jimmy Mulville, and working on a great comedy project with the BBC. It will be good to have a laugh again!"

Jimmy Mulville comments: "When Cheryl Taylor got behind this brilliant script by Mark Bussell and Justin Sbresni (The Worst Week Of My Life, Armstrong And Miller) and Danny Cohen suggested David Jason for the starring role, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!"

Cheryl Taylor adds: "I couldn't be more thrilled that one of our most celebrated and talented comedy actors will be entertaining audiences again on BBC One. Mark and Justin have written a brilliant vehicle for David Jason and I can't wait to see the finished product."”

Big drop for Candy Cabs, which fell 1.2m week-on-week to 4.26m (17.6%).

Campus also fell to, to 539,900 (3.21%). That's a really low rating for C4 at 10pm - I can't remember them getting such a low rating in the slot before apart from that 3D week.

CSI is rock solid at the moment.

Not surprised by the low rating for Britain's Next Big Thing- I didn't like anything about it. It was really badly edited for a BBC show.

No figures for SS2 for Man U v Chelsea, in the 'multichannels'. No doubt the highest of the night.

Why do DS always overlook Sky Sports' football ratings?

Perhaps a few 'women's' programmes like Candy Cab will benefit with time shifting?

Solid ratings, as usual, for BBC1 pre-9pm. The drop for Candy Cabs was bigger than I expected - although it's been slated by the critics, I thought its target audience would've enjoyed it but it seems not. Next week it'll be up against an ITV drama, so I can't see it improving and it now probably won't be recommissioned unless timeshift is very good. It would've been quite difficult to bring it back anyway due to Jo Joyner's EastEnders commitments. Quite low for Britain's Next Big Thing, which I thought might've got half a million more. Terrible rating for Grimefighters - at first after seeing that rating I thought it was a repeat, but it was actually a new episode. Why ITV keeps recommissioning it, I don't know, because it rates poorly and also doesn't exactly help out the programme at 8pm.

Countrywise steady week-on-week, but Tuesday 8pm is becoming a dire situation for the channel with most shows now rating below 3m. Smugglers did decently for FlopZone standards though - highest rating in the slot this year apart from live events and stripped drama. If there's scope for a recommission, I think they ought to do another series. It seems to me that the male-skewing factual programmes have done better on Tuesday nights for ITV in recent years than other factual: Coastline Cops, Holloway, other prison doc, Send in the Dogs have done better than most of their other factual output so maybe it's something they should look at doing more instead of 'celebrity factual vehicles' which don't rate well half the time (Caroline Quentin, Amanda Holden...)

Campus is rating really badly. The pilot a couple of years ago didn't do well anyway (under 1m iirc) so it was an odd decision by Channel 4 to not only recommission it but to make the episodes 65 mins long which is too long for that time for a new comedy series, I feel. The Tutankhamum documentary on C5 is doing alright for a show which has been shown quite a lot of times before. Good audiences for the CSIs - CSI Vegas has seen a boost since Silk ended which I think was taking away a few of its viewers. The Cleveland Show on E4 hasn't really taken off as how I suspect Channel 4 were hoping - I think they were hoping for it to become their 'Family Guy' like how that performs for BBC3 but TCS has been struggling.

Still more than some people predicted for ep1.

Not a brilliant rating, but ok for what it is, and we don't know how it's timeshifting yet.

Big news!

A major coup that to land David Jason, who seemed to have settled into the easy semi-retirement of stodgy ITV dramas despite his status as a comedy legend. It has a strong team behind it, even if the synopsis hardly sets the pulse racing.

Hope this gets a good Autumn slot and is a hit. Britain needs a good new mainstream hit sitcom to laugh along to.

I do wonder whether it's going to skew more "blokey"?

My other half (for whose benefit I had put it on...) had disappeared upstairs by halfway through, whilst I continued watching - purely for quality control purposes you understand...

It's a 4 part series. It's only been shown twice before, once in primetime with a same-week repeat on weekend daytimes.

As I've said before (and I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot here), we don't get any data for Sky Sports 2 in our document. If we did, we'd report it as Chelsea v Man U must've got over 2m last night.

I'll look into ways of getting it in the future, but it's not on my urgent list at the moment - although I understand it distorts our Multichannel list.

Been a while since the gap between BBC1 and ITV1 at 9pm on a Tuesday has been under 1m, hasn't it? Surprised Candy Cabs dropped off by 1m after being extremely stable last week.

Good chance ITV will win the 9pm slot next Monday and Tuesday, Motorway Cops will probably get ~4m as will Candy Cabs so The Reckoning should beat that quite comfortably.

I thought you said the reason was that Digital Spy is an entertainment based site that doesn't cover sports news and that's why sports ratings got left out?

The reason you've just gave makes a lot more sense!

Staring at Jo Joyner is not quality control.
