The more atypical it is to agree to take part the less valid the data becomes.

This is why polls on DS are so much junk.

BARB can't possibly have a cross section of the UK TV viewing population, the process of being "BARBED" is so protracted and invasive that only a few people would take part.

They may very well have a cross-section of social groups, but the people they have must be a bit weird to agree to such a procedure being done to them for very little gain.

No it isn't. Online polls are rubbish because the respondants are self selecting.

BARB panels are not self selected.

BARB, like all market research practitioners, try to ensure high response rates which it achieves. Clearly there are questions about the types of people who do market research against those who don't, this is difficult to quantify however. That said, again, the response rates are high (70%+).

Thanks for that, What would I do without BBC4? At a time when I've almost given up on TV, as there's so little on I've interest in! On the plus side I've seen loads of great films! This trailer is stunning though, beautifully shot and edited, it's a work of art itself.

And Vernon Kay has been replaced by Keith Lemon as host despite having filmed 2 episodes already. Intriguing. Personally I think with the type of show it is going for a comedy angle is a better idea than using a generic host.

Funny you should say that as that is what the show makers said. From Broadcast:

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...025525.article

Quote:
“Lemon squeezed into Sing if You Can

Leigh Francis character Keith Lemon has replaced Vernon Kay on ITV1’s primetime entertainment format Sing if You Can after a pilot revealed the show would work better in the hands of a comedian.

An ITV insider said the format, which sees celebrities battle it out by singing in an extreme circumstances, took it “by surprise” and was more “madcap” in tone than expected.

As a result, the broadcaster sat down with producer RDF Television and the talent last week and it was decided that Lemon, who was originally slated as a judge on the show, will replace original host Vernon Kay.

Former X Factor contestant Stacey Solomon will remain in place as co-host.”

Online polls on DS are the opinions of those who choose to vote.

BARB panels are "selected by them" apparently. I've never had anyone from BARB knock on my door in the last 24 years of my life. I don't believe the ratings because the only person I know who likes EastEnders is my boyfriend.

And when Crossroads was up against Neighbours back in 2001/2002, everyone I knew in School would come in and talk about Crossroads, Hollyoaks and Family Affairs. No one liked the other soaps round here.

Really surprising that the football didn't really dent the other terrestrials at all. Silk should be certain for a recomission now it has proven itself against much tougher competition. CSI also held up much better than I thought.

Interesting news regarding Sing If You Can. Quite shocked that ITV are having Soloman & Lemon presenting a primetime ITV entertainment show though..could be interesting. Also surely they'll have to find a new show for Vernon now too.

Piers Morgan Leads CNN Surge, Glenn Beck Slumps

Fuelled by coverage of the middle east unrest and the earthquake in Japan, CNN recorded its first M-F primetime demo win over MSNBC for 6 quarters. It also topped MSNBC across the day in total viewers.

CNN:
Primetime - Up 28% vs 2010
Piers Morgan Tonight - Up 52%
Anderson Cooper 360 - Up 40%
Parker Spitzer/In The Arena - Up 14%

MSNBC:
Primetime - Up 9%
Olbermann/O'Donnell - Down 6%
Rachel Maddow Show - Up 15%
O'Donnell/Ed Show - Up 22%

FOX NEWS:
Primetime - Down 21%
The O'Reilly Factor - Down 18%
Hannity - Down 20%
Greta - Down 28%

Glenn Beck has stolen Piers' headlines, however. While his 5pm show still beats any MSNBC or CNN primetime show by around 150k (50%) in the demo, he was down 38% from this time last year. His future at the channel was already in doubt amid rumours that higher ups had grown tired of him and the hassle he brings. It's possible that his departure could ease tensions behind the scenes at News Corp where many, including members of the Murdoch family, aren't fond of Roger Ailes and the editorial direction of FOX News. Alas, Mr Ailes division is the most profitable at News Corp so he has a lot of clout (to the point that he allegedly prevented Murdoch from openly backing Obama in 2008).

Yet, over a year on, they still have no Freeview HD homes on their panel.

For the main FTA channels, I'm sure BARB is fine, but for multichannels, it's 'pinch of salt' time.

BBC1 held up really well against the football, with Holby City rating exactly the same as last week (assuming the rating in the TV roundup is correct) and Silk down very little. If an England football match can't dent BBC1 on Tuesdays, what else can (apart from BGT/IAC)? That 7.30-9pm block on Tuesdays for BBC1 is very strong and Holby's audience seems to be very loyal. The other terrestrials also held up well against the football too - I thought CSI would dip below 2m but it was very steady.

Looks like DS TV's 5.79m rating for Holby City was incorrect. It actually had 5.3m (21.4%) as DS Soaps Roundup and Media Guardian have reported.

A couple more ratings from MG:

BBC Three
23:00- Family Guy: 711,000
23:20- Family Guy: 727,000

They were repeats too, not new episodes. Great night for BBC3 overall.
