Having their own brand of OS on their own brand of phone isn't a monopoly surely?

Having the same brand of OS on ALL phones would be more like a monopoly I would have thought.

Indeed, all PS3s use Sony's OS, does that mean they also have a monopoly, same goes for Xbox and Wii, even blackberry and palm (now HP).

You really need to look up what it actually means to have a monopoly. This has nothing to do with it.

err, you do..

In economics, a monopoly (from Greek monos / μονος (alone or single) + polein / πωλειν (to sell)) exists when a specific individual or an enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it.

Why do iphone users argue that black is white??

If you think it's an illegal monopoly, this is who you need to complain to:

You are all correct but not entirely. Apple does have a monopoly in selling iOS based products. However what competition authorities are concerned is the abuse of "significant market power" to the detriment of consumers.

The competition authorities define what is the "relevant market", it's actually the first stage of any decision/report they undertake.

For simplicity, let's go back 5 years to the days of Apple's iPod. Apple has a monopoly on the sale of iPods. But, from the competition authorities' point of view the relevant market would not have been iPods, it could have been mp3 players, it could even have portable audio devices in general. The closeness of substitutes matters.

Exactly, if it was detrimental to the market to have your own OS, BlackBerry would have been investigated years ago. Just because Apple make the OS and the hardware doesn't mean it's illegal. Clearly the above poster doesn't have a Scooby about how business works, either that or they're just here to wind everyone else up. Come to think of it....

So it seems the point being made is that Apple has a monopoly on iOS devices. But that's a nonsensical point. It isn't a monopoly, it's simply a proprietary OS. As someone pointed out earlier, do Sony have a monopoly on the PS3 operating system, or Microsoft on the Xbox one, or BlackBerry?

Apple do not have a monopoly in the phone market. What exactly is the point being made?

My Fiat car only supports a Fiat engine. Damn those sneaky sods having a monopoly. Oh well at least they don't make the petrol for it too!

Wrong, your little car supports whatever engine you can shoehorn into the thing.

Really, what are you going on about? Apple makes the hardware and software for their devices. That isn't a monopoly, the idea of which doesn't make any sense in the context of what you're saying. Please explain how it's any different to BlackBerry.

But come on guys, any sensible person wouldn't use a smartphone as an alarm clock! Or so certain members here would lead you to believe but are unable to do so again due to being on an extended 'holiday'.

That is pretty poor PR for Apple, to have that happen 3 times now is shocking.

It is pretty dismal that the bug hasn't been fixed by now. It creates a wave of bad publicity for Apple every six months.

My clock went forward automatically and the alarm went off at the right time (single, non-recurrent alarm set the night before), but I had another alarm clock set just in case.

It's a minor bug in the scheme of things, but it still should have been sorted by now.

Hmm...

I prepared for the Alarm bug. I even set a timer to run so that the alarm for that would wake me up at my usual time - without changing the recurring alarms I'd set ages ago.

I was then woken up to my alarms as normal. As well as the timer.

Based on this, I was quite shocked at the reporting of the Alarms Bug raising its head again. I'd updated to 4.3.1 on Friday, so don't know if that's the reason why I myself wasn't affected.

Anyone else? Or am I just utterly jammy?

You're not alone, mine went off OK too, I'd also updated the software.
Very strange!!!

My regular 5pm alarm went off as expected today, so I thought it had been fixed in the last update.

If you think it's an illegal monopoly, this is who you need to complain to:
Monopolies aren't intrinsically illegal.

And what Apple actually has isn't so much a monopoly as a closed system. They control it all. There are benefits to this: they can ensure all parts of the system work together and are of high quality. Although I don't have any Apple products, I think it is an interesting and valid approach, and I'm glad someone is trying it. My world is better for Apple existing.

I may, when posting the above link, have been a little sarcastic.
