Hello - newbie poster here - moved into a new home and have discovered a telephone system that has a BT master socket and then a whole load of broadband and phone extension lines unconnected and bundled together nearby.

I'm wondering whether the previous owners (uncontactable) had some sort of PABX system or similar? Can't seem to see any other simple way of connecting up so many broadband and telephone sockets...

There are phone sockets in just about every room. If nothing else I want to be able to use interactive functions on Sky and not have the phone in the least convenient place in the house...

PABX sounds unlikely!

R U sure they're the RJ11 phone connectors using 6 wire cable, and not the RJ45 8 wire ones for base t ethernet?

I agree with spiney. Check the cables to see if they have CAT5 written on them are they a greyish colour? Instead of just white.

You say there is a telephone system is there another box on the wall? if so what type is it?

If you are still confused take a picture and upload it to one of the photo sites ie Flickr. Then we can be sure of what you have and how to make it work.

Thanks. There is a mix but the majority are ethernet. Either way I am not sure what I need to make best use of what is there...

It is very possible that they mounted their broadband router near the master socket then ran ethernet cables out to various locations. if there are four such cables then that would strongly suggest that is what they did as most routers have four ports.

So somewhere in the other rooms should be the other end of these cables, maybe wired to a wall plate or more likely just a trailing lead coiled up somewhere.

If you can locate the cables then you could do the same. Just mount your broadband router next to the master socket and plug the ethernet cables in the back and make use of he wiring they have put in.

As for the phone cabling. The terminals on the back of the removable section of the master socket can really only take two wires securely. Sometimes you can persuade a third to go in but no more than that (and yes I have tried! ).

So if there are more than two phone cables to wire up you might need to do something a bit more creative if you want more than two extensions.

I would guess that you could put a broadband Router where the exchangeline is. Plug the CAT 5 cables you need in to provide broadband around the house. (this maybe a case of trial and error by plugging in one at a time to find the right ones)

It might be better to look in the phone book and get a local telecoms firm to pop in. I work for one which is not part of BT for this type of job we would normally charge £75 for the first hour and we would normally complete in one hour. I doubt your in Norfolk though

Thanks guys. Sadly bryemycaz I'm not up your way. I much prefer using independents so thanks for the steer on hourly rates. If anyone has any good recommendations for folk near Sunbury on Thames...

I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was looking at. As it's a relatively new conversion all the wiring for everything including Sky etc runs behind the walls and between floors so it's difficult to see what goes where.

Thank you again... Spin

I have a small phone system in the house with a mixture of standard PSTN phone sockets and Cat 5 sockets.
I have set my sky up to utilise one of the sockets (I have prefixed the dial up number on the sky box with an access digit to get an outside line)
As previously requested is there any indication of what the manufacture is of the phone system?
