If that was the case then my Defy wouldnt start half a million things when you just turn wifi on and then leave them on.

I use Android assistant and its brill, it doesnt touch (if you dont want it to) system stuff and i can target it to shut down all the crap the phone starts either on boot or on turning wifi on. it is easier than rooting the phone and removing all the bollards i dont want to use but Motorola put in there.

Going back to the original question i get 70 or 80 hours using the phone as just a phone and about 20 hours with data enabled, games, wifi, etc. (Defy 2.1)

My rooted and fully deoranged 2.1 ZTE Blade running only what i want manages about the same

I had my phone charge all night last night, since turning it on at 7am ths morning it has now gone from 100% - 90% already. I don't have that many applications running.

Right now in battery use it shows:
Android system 78%
Cell stand by 16%
Phone idle 5%

At least you can fit a spare battery on the vast majority of phones.

On my old G1 I use a double size battery that comes with a new back panel, and you can get this type of thing for a few phones now.

When I have searched for info on battery life in general, it seems that typically batteries quickly lose the first 10%.

I am quite surprised these things are so rare.I could really do with one for both my Pulse Mini and possibly the San Francisco

The Pulse Mini gets about 4 hours using a GPS app and with the screen turned on. 10 Hours would be more than useful in this instance.

I think the problem is that the phone is then no longer 'thin' and for the fashion concious user this is unacceptable For me its a great solution and gives me a couple of days between charges, more if I knock off wireless etc.

Indeed. But very useful for those occasions when needed.

Similarly I'd really like to see Pixel Qi screens on them too. In that at times visibility is more important than quality.

But your being practical Alan, something not often used in the world of mobile phones. You can get them for a few phones now including the iPhone !

How do you turn off android part of the phone?

I do. I stick it in a cheap desk cradle that charges it and holds it upright on my desk during the day, and leave it on the mains-usb charger every night.

settings:wireless controls:mobile networks:un clock data traffic.
keep off unless you are going to browse the net.
can be a pain if you rely on your phone for email and browsing i suppose

Doesnt that defeat one of the main points of having a smartphone? Whats the point of having a smartphone, if you going to disable access to web bases services?

I doubt that very much. I suppose the only time is if you go camping or to a festival for a weekend. However if you drive, then use a car charger.

With modern smartphone, charging once a day is the norm. Maybe the blackberry owners are the exception.

Sounds like you are not getting full value out of your smartphone or maybe your smartphone is not that smart but is more of a dumb client.

you only disable the web based services some of the time eg overnight when using it as an alarm or when at work, even if not actually browsing the battery will still drain

In both those instances (overnight and at work) you will (in most cases) be able to charge your phone. So is there really a need to turn of wifi/3g?

Having said that, I use ultimate juice to only enable wifi/3g once every 30 mins. Most of the time I dont need to do this, its just that I am lazy, and cant be bothered to disable it when at home/work, and re-enable it when out.

At the moment I only charge overnight...dont need to at work, even though I do have the facility to do so.

Yep I agree...

I really wish battery technology would move on...it seems to lag so far behind everything else. The first manufacturer that can produce a similar size battery to what we have today, but can power a smartphone for 2+ days is going to make a killing.

Define heavy use.

Heavy use for me is:-

Gaming
Surfing
Instant messaging
Email
Phone calls for an hour or so
40+ texts sent and received
GPS

General use:-

Few texts
Phone call for a few mins or so
Surfing for a while

If i do the heavy use i need to charge daily on my old iphone 4 and my desire hd.

If i do general use on my old iphone 4 and desire hd i may have about 40% battery left but i would still charge it at night as i dont want to be going out next day with a less than half full battery.

Pretty much all smart phones need charged daily or risk a flat battery half way through the next day.
