There's a few things on a website which I'd like to buy, however it's an American site so it's all in dollars. I have a Royal Bank of Scotland Visa debit card, am I able to pay using this- or will there be charges for it?

Yes, the visa part of your debit card will convert it in to GBP for you, you probably won't get the best exchange rate and there is a transaction charge, normally 1.50 but I use my Natwest visa debit card regularly when abroad.

you should get inter bank exchange rate which is OK ,but the other charges will ruin this ,if you are going to do this regularly .get a sanatander zero credit card and you will have no fees but pay it off straight away as interest is high ,aslo Halifax have card but cannot remember it .

That wont affect the rate or whether the transaction can be done, it will only affect whether the company can post to the UK.

It may not be accepted. I ordered a DVD from Amazon France and the Visa Debit card was declined yet plenty of money in my account. It was only 20 euros.

Another possible complication - the bank or Visa might wrongly think that the card is being used in the USA and either reject or query the transaction.

I tried to use my Natwest visa debit to order something from a USA website... it would not go through... so I had to use my Mastercard.

One other thing to note, which may apply to you too, i had to pay customs charges on the item I bought. and it was a bit more expensive than I was expecting (not just a few quid!)

I've ordered loads of stuff from the US over the years from Tower,US Amazon,Barnes And Noble etc, never had a US transaction queried by the bank. The only time I've had genuine transactions queried was when I was organising football travel, did several games together and ran up around 150 worth of train and match tickets, got a phone call from the bank a few hours later asking for confirmation that they were genuine transactions.
