Hey guys.
As above really, just got an iPhone 2g Cheaply to replace my broken Blackberry.

Trying to get all my apps sorted before my tariff changes over.

Basically, a few of the apps require os 4.0 to use, but obviously being a 2G it doesn't have an OS that up to date.

Basically, is there somewhere i can download older versions?

ie Ebay App 2.0.2 as opposed to 2.1.0

Other apps such as the Clubcard and Redlaser Scanner too...

Any suggestions would be great, as ebay is the most important one!

Cheers
David

Unfortunately iPhone apps are tied to a specific iTunes account (even free ones) and can't be shared between users like this (even if someone had the old version, you wouldn't be able to use it).

eBay's mobile site is quite good, so you could use that.

Some games like Fifa 11 were made for newer Iphones better processor and screen.

If you owned a 2G from the start you could just keep the older versions.

I guess if you want the app store the older phone is not as good same for Ipods but should still be a great phone for music, films, calling and texting.

Yeah seems thats the case, but perhaps Apple should have thought this through a little more, and people Using iTunes and an Older iPhone would only be able to access what they could use on that device, ie older versions - Its not like the central server / whatever they use just updates ebay and deletes all old file versions etc...

Seems a bit poor on apples part, as i've got 6 months till my contract renews, and a 2G iPhone which i've bought to replace a broken Blackberry..

Never mind eh!

Would be a 2008 release. 3G was June 2009.

The original iPhone was discontinued in June 2008 so it's getting close to 2 3/4 years since it stopped being sold.

The 3G came out in 2008, but Apple continued to sell the original iPhone in some countries as a cheaper alternative until the 3GS came out.

At which point, the 3G became the cheaper "old" model.

If you look at the iPhone 3G, that was on sale until June last year, yet Apple has already dropped support for it.

It's also worth considering that the first iPhone (2G) didn't have the App Store at launch, so it was never fully designed to run apps. Yes, Apple gave some backwards compatibility, but the device is generally underpowered by comparison to current models and with the increasing sophistication of some of the games and apps in the store, it's just not up to the job.

It's like buying an old car, but then complaining it won't run on unleaded fuel. Things move on, especially in the world of mobile.

I've got an HTC Hero and there are apps coming out that won't run on it because I don't have Open GLes 1.1. I have to live with that.

The bit in bold is true, but the iPhone 3G has the same CPU and GPU as the original iPhone, yet it can run 4.2.1

Not sure where you're getting that from. Everything I've read says the 2G was officially discontinued in June 2008. The 3G was the first 'cheaper' option Apple offered when introducing a new model.

This sounds correct to me. I bought the iPhone 3G when it first came out and I'm pretty sure the original iPhone wasn't an option offered.

OP, have you considered jail-breaking? Then you could install any version of the app you want, providing you could find the .ipa file for that version on the net.

I'm not sure on the legality of this - it is obviously against Apple's T&Cs, but if you were only installing free apps (as oppose to pirating paid-for apps) I THINK you would be on the right side of the law.

Though I imagine Apple would argue to the contrary.

I had an iPhone 3G with iOS 4 on just before I upgraded to iPhone 4. It was dog slow with with iOS 4 and had a cut down version of iOS 4. Not all the features were implemented because the device wasn't powerful enough to run all of them well.
