Absolute trust.

We used to have a cat, who would sleep flat on his back, stretched out on the couch.

He would also sleep so soundly, that you could pick him up and move him, without waking him.

In fact, the first time I went to move him in this state, his body was so floppy I actually thought he was dead.

I've often thought that, for him to sleep so deeply, with his belly exposed, was the sign of ultimate trust in his family and his home.

I agree, how lovely.
Over the years I have had a mix of pets from rescues and ours from puppy/kitten or daughter of our cat; those with us from the beginning are always more trusting and likely to sleep on their backs, even a German Shepherd used to do it. (Not very elegant )

I have a rescue dog who does not let us look at his teeth or paws, he gets very angsty, but he is lovely in all other ways, so different from my other dog who has total trust in us regards touching her but can be a madam in attitude, she has been with us since a puppy.

Yes, I too think it is a sign of trust and "relaxedness" (new word there lol).

All five of mine are lap cats/fusspots, and I don't know if others are the same as me, (probably not ), but I have found myself watching them sleep, whilst draped at various angles all over me, and I find it almost humbling that such a beautiful, self sufficient creature trusts me enough to be so relaxed.

Aww my little girl at this moment is lying in front of the fire.....on her back with one paw up and her belly protuding.........its her little thing....as think all cats *have a particular* way of laying..........I can touch her tummy.....she'd get excited but then its stops.....

The only time my cat has absolute trust is when I am about to go to bed. I usually find her stretched out on my bed taking up as much space as possible trying to pretend to be asleep.

Both my cats do this. Also if they are asleep and wake up when I approach them they then flop onto their backs with all four legs outretched..their arms above their head so to speak. One of them does it a lot, instantly posing with legs akimbo...he's like furry centerfold!

My cat does this all the time - it looks so funny and cute. I think it's just a cat thing - it's really comical

My friend has a dog that sleeps on its back, with it's legs spread, showing off its Town Halls.

Every now and again, its tail will curl up and cover its knackers for a few seconds.

That's the signal that it's just farted in its sleep.

It's funny that one of mine will lie next to me on the bed practically upside down, with her tummy on show, all perfect-trusty, and yet sometimes when I call her for her dinner, she'll think I'm up to something and run off and hide! Birdbrain.

Our dog is lying stretched out across his basket, it's great, we've only had him a week but he definitely likes his new home

Lola sleeps deeply like that, flat on her back, legs in the air, it cracks me up.
