Hi all,

I own this kit
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kiiro-DA-AV5.../dp/B00005TPQH

one of my friends would like to have something similar. Please note this sound system needs to be without any disk player as he already have these. The DVD player he's got has no 5.1 RCA output, only digital either Coax or optical.

the kiiro would be perfect for him but this isn't available anymore. I bought mine over 7 years ago and still rocks!

WHat similar system are out there for £££ not over £150

I have lost count of how many hours I spent searching for a kit but no luck so far.

Again the system has to have digital inputs as well!

Many thanks for any clues.

TBH, those type of kits aren't that widespread any more.

Logitech Z5500 Digital PC Multimedia Home Theatre Speaker System - 505 Watt (Total).. but it's recently hit the £300 price mark so is way over your friends budget. And at that price you might as well by a proper AV amp & speaker kit such as an Onkyo HTS3305 or the latest equivalent which are better (DD, DTS, HD audio, DPLII) and better suited to AV.

There's a couple of systems on Ebuyer within your price bracket:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/192031 £89.99

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/248765 £114.99

But he's looking for a home cinema kit w/o DVD player, so he needs a digital input and DD decoding as a bare minimum.

Neither of the above have digital inputs (so no DD decoding of course) and there's not even mention of DPL decoding for the analog inputs. In effect they're the home version of bog standard PC speakers.

things have moved on greatly

you would be better to up the budget to get the Onkyo.

you need HDMI for everything to connect to the amp and then one cable to your TV.

ohhh dear how am I going to explain this now to his wife who wanted to get one for my friend's birthday....
pity that one has to buy the DVD player to get a budget surround system.

thanks for your input anyway.... the Onkyo looks like a nice system but a way over her budget

They have just brought out the Onkyo 3405 - this year's model, so if there are any 3305s left they may sell them off cheap in the next month or two.

try a cash convertors - they always seem to have used Home Cinema stuff - if you can't run to about £300 for an Onkyo.

It's a bit of a no-brainer really.

Have a mooch on the RS web site and you'll see that the cheapest AV Receiver is £139 (Yam RXV367 in silver), and the cheapest 5.1 speaker kit is £79 (Pioneer SHS100). £220 in total. It's a nice amp but it doesn't do HD audio. For the same money (or less with the hotdeals offer) the Onkyo kit does HD audio too. Either the Onkyo or the Yam will knock the stuffing out of any similarly priced all-in-one DVD Home Cinema kit for features, sound quality, connectivity and value.
