I attempted to update my Milestone today, I followed the instructions exactly but now when the phone attempts to boot, it gets stuck at the Android animated logo. Removing the battery and forcing a restart makes no difference.

I emailed Motorola a few minutes ago. This is very annoying. The phone is out of warranty but they should still take responsibility.

How long did you leave it at the logo? It can take many minutes to boot the first time after upgrading, the instructions I've seen say up to 15 minutes. If you did a battery pull while it was copying files you may have corrupted something.

It was for over an hour, the phone did not progress beyond the Android logo.

Try updating it again. Might have just been a bad flash.

I can't, the computer can't detect the phone in its current state.

That doesn't sound right. I may have gone too far into it to see where you're coming from as I have Android SDK installed and shouldn't have too many problems booting into recovery, writing to the SD card, then flashing another ROM... or even restoring from a Nandroid backup.

It required rooting and such, some time and reading up too, but nothing too strenuous. If the phone is out of warranty, I would assume you're not paying for it by contract? Personally I would take the risk and look for something that might help at the xda forums. Maybe something like the second link about how to get it back to stock could help? The least you could do is try some snooping about.

None of that would work sadly.

Even if a recovery image had been put on the phone then when hes updated the phone with the proper firmware, the recovery would be overwritten.

Only way to sort this is to get the phone into its bootloader. Having a look in to how to do that now.

Try this on your phone:-

Press and hold the camera button and power button at the same time until an exclamation mark in a triangle apears, release the buttons then press volume up + camera and a menu should come up. go to wipe phone or factory reset

Didn't work, there was no response at all. I should add that the Android logo animation that constantly play will occasionally flicker for a split second.

Still no response from Motorola.

Ok, I got a response from Motorola, I had to hold down the X key on the keyboard with the power butten to access the system menu. The issue is now fixed.

That's not what I'm saying. What I did was not a suggestion for him to try as I think I've gone too far into it, but it would be a safety net for me if my ROM blew up. Plus, I'm not using a stock ROM and at the moment, I don't intend to be. If anyone could have helped soonest, then I think they would have been on xda. Anyway, if all is sorted....

Well it was working, I just went to check the phone and now nothing works, it won't turn on and the charging LED doesn't respond either.

Ah false alarm, I was able to get it working by removing the battery, holding down the power button an then re-inserting the battery, it powered on fine.

Similar trick worked for my Sky remote.

I'm waiting for the 2.2 update for the Defy.

What does 2.2 add compared to 2.1?
