renewable contract
Why is it that Bt are as far as I know the only telecoms company that uses this disgraceful system?
A friend of mine cancelled her phone and broadband to go with sky and now been hit with at least a £40 bill for cancelling her contract early. she said she did not get any letter to say it was renewable and that the contract was going to run on. I told her to fight it, certainly since she had almost 2 weeks without phone and broadband over the new year because of a line problem. Time Ofcom acted on this typical of Bt to be so worried that people will not stay with their tacky service that they have to keep locking people in. In the long run she will still save money with Sky, the £40 will be paid back in the first 4 months, as she was on Bt broadband option one and we worked out she is saving at least a tenner a month going to Sky and Sky won't charge for going over the limits, which she was doing a fair bit with Bt since her boyfriend went back to live there. I feel a bit guilty as I said they would be better off on Sky, but I did not realise she was on a renewable contract as she was with BT before they started doing that. Am I glad i am away from the despicable company |

BT's Unlimited Evening & Weekend calls plan gets the most coverage. BT is supposed to send out warning letters a month before renewal will occur but some (deviously or genuinely) deny receiving same.
However, other companies certainly 'use' such contracts. For example, TalkPlus Telecom and Optimum Calls both appear to use 5 year auto-renewing contracts on which you have to remember to call them up exactly 30 days prior to the due date - if you miss the day you're trapped again for another 5 years (but they do offer a £395 + VAT breach of contract option). |

As i've posted elsewhere this has just happened to me although it'll be the best part of £60 to get me out of this 'verbal' contract. (as the helpful bt advisor said, 'read the small print, read the small print!').
what does your friend plan to do by way of 'fighting' this? As much as i don't like it i can't see any way of avoiding it. I tried to get Sky to throw in a sweetener to change now but the best they suggested was reatining the bt line rental to avoid the charge but i'm not convinced it will. |

Noise, i complained to BT and they've admitted that they hadn't wrote to me ands will therefore waive the charge.
'tis worth fighting! |
