Camera work: why do they suddenly go to a long shot in the middle of a routine?

You're watching them skate, enjoying it, and all of a sudden, you're switched to a distant view from the far side of the rink and can barely make out what they're doing.

What is the point of this?

It seems to happen in every routine.

The camera work has been very poor this year, sometimes the skaters are even out of shot! I think it's probably done to the new studio and them not being used to it yet.

It's exasperating, isn't it?

God only knows but I agree it's really bloody annoying.

It isn't very good this year .... they keep getting the odd camera in the way, lose the skaters or we miss stuff as they go to a rally long shot where the skaters are too far away to see what they're doing .... it took me a few mins to reaise that Choe & Michael had fallen last night as the camera was way back more interested in filming the paterns on the ice

I know that it must be difficult filming the group pro routines but that the time they should be doing the long shots so we see everything that's going on .. yet they insist on constant close ups so you miss half of what's going on with the rest of the group

I thought they did it last night because a sixth sense told them Chloe and Michael were about to fall over ...but I take your point. I'm all for seeing the patterns they're making but it needs a bit of judicious work to make sure they go at the right time.

It happened a lot in other years too, though.

Another thing they do a times is to show only the pro, so that we can't see what the celeb is doing them at all.

All the decent camera crews are off preparing for that wedding

Definately; I know I have complained (on here) in the past. I still don't see anything that happens on the left hand side of the rink as you look at it. I used to think it was my tv settings screwing up, but it is no different on iplayer (PC) or youtube vids put up privately.

The most annoying occurrence on Sunday, was the build-up to Chloe and Michael's big lift. They disappeared off the screen, both on ice, then reappeared with Chloe standing upright in Michael's arms. Grr

Incompetence. They should know from the dress rehearsal where the cameras should be and how to cut between shots so that the skaters are never out of shot.
