I'm building a new office at the end of the garden. Eventually the plan is to make it in to a small home cinema as well. I'll not be buying the projector for another year or so but when I build the ceiling I want to 'prepare' for it i.e. a wooden block for the mounting bracket, mains and hdmi cables.

My questions is, is there an optimal distance that the projector should be from the screen? I don't want to run all the cabling then discover that they should be another metre back away from the screen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Mark

Many budget projectors (and some not so budget) have a very limited zoom range.

This means for a given screen size the placement becomes rather important.

The further back the projector then obviously the larger the image projected for a given projector. The problem is that there is not a standard, although most projectors will give a very similar image size at a particular distance.

You would have to look at a range of projectors spec sheets to see roughly where you would need to place the wooden block.

www.projectorcentral.com gives lots of details about projectors and many user guides for each one.

Also they have a distance calculator to help with placement for most projectors:

In this case the Acer H5360 (eMachines V700)

It all depends on the lens of the projector you buy. Some models need a longer distance, others need to be closer to the screen.

Projectors usually have a zoom which gives a small amount for adjustment for picture size. But once you reach either end of the range then you have to move the projector to change picture size further.

What you should do is put in enough cable to reach for a projector mounted at 1.3 ~ 2.5 picture widths from the screen.

e.g. 7ft wide picture (not diagonal) = 7x1.3 ~ 7x2.5

That will cover all but the most extreme projectors reasonably comfortably.
