Can't seem to find any links regarding the Amazon Android app store and nothing about the store is appearing on Android market. I've read it's been pulled.

And apple have already started action over the name 'App Store'

Apple sues Amazon over 'App Store' name

Fruit and Veg Stores watch in anticipation of a precedent.

Isn't it supposed to be US-only at launch? So that would mean UK accounts wouldn't work.

Rio Angry Birds is exclusive to the Amazon App store right? If so I would think it's UK too as they had a big ad for the game in the Metro this morning.

I think they've been trying to establish a trademark on the name App Store. If their application is still pending then defending the mark potentially strengthens their argument. The fact that BlackBerry went with App World, and Palm with App Catalog, and Android went with Market, means they recognise there's a potential for trademark conflict. It's business. It's what big companies do.

Oh well, I don't know then.

This article says US-only: http://www.tgdaily.com/mobility-feat...ens-apple-sues

That might be the issue then, I found it via Amazon.com website for Angry Birds. As it fails at the point of purchase I guess its my non-US payment card.

In fact if I try via the website appstore I get this:

We are sorry...

* We could not process your order because of geographical restrictions on the product which you were attempting to purchase. Please refer to the terms of use for this product to determine the geographical restrictions.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

there is a small difference..apple call theres App Store. Amazon have gone with Appstore (note the missing space between app and store).

I think Apple will fail, its a generic term..like hairdresser, grocery store, car dealer etc. A bit silly of apple.

Apple may struggle a little if the Amazon appstore cannot be used at all on Apple products and is exclusive to Android then it is hard to see any conflict or issue that could cause confusion. A shared name within a different brand is not that uncommon, there are only so many names for things around.

To me it would depend as to whether they can show app or store as being a brand akin to how 'Hoover Store' would be. The Itunes store certainly is.

An Amazon store is a good idea in that choice is almost always good for the consumer. And the Google App Store certainly needs filtering.

It's US-only at the minute, but I'm sure they'll migrate it over here at some point.

I'm not sure what they aim to achieve with it though - it does the exact same thing as the built-in App Store on our phones already. I suppose the biggest draw will be for people with tablets that don't support the official App Store - this way they can have the Apps they want without messing about with the software.

It's curated, controlled. Likely to have a smaller selection, but with higher quality control - so developers won't be having direct copies of their apps ripped off, as described in this Guardian article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...games-concerns

its not exclusive to appstore for android at all as I've got it on my ipod touch.. its a very good game.. mike the fact its birds.and monkeys and not pigs..

anyway, its us only from amazon at the moment which is stupid... if u download the apk from another source then u need the app as u have to be signed in to play it which is also stupid.. plus angry birds Rio is only free today from amazon so no doubt when we can get it it will be a paid app...

Good god apple are pathetic!

They do not own the name App nor Store so cant see them winning this to be honest. Hope the judge tells them to go f'#*k themselves.

I think it's exclusive for Android on Amazon. It's not exclusive on iPhone.

I am not too fussd about it to be honest. I have appbrain and the android market. I dont really need another market place.

In the long run its more competition, so things will evolve and improve quicker. Other than that I dont really see a benefit to it.

I'd definitely rather have a smaller selection of Android apps with a really great search function. Android Market seems very hit and miss and if Amazon are going to use their Recommended For You system, that could be really good.

Thing is, if they did file a copyright on "App Store" back in 2008, then they legally own the idea behind it. No such things really existed in the way that they have done since Apple kick-started them... "App Store" now really only means one thing and it was Apple who coined the idea.

As much as I hate how pathetic Apple is when it comes to legal battles, I fear they will win again...

I don't think the patent was actually granted - still pending subject to a trial, I think.

Many of these huge companies behave the same way when it comes to patents. The recent Sony/LG stuff is a good case in point. Microsoft have had ludicrous patent claims, so have Nokia, and I'm sure Apple even tried to patent the 'slide to unlock' feature. Essentially, the companies know these patents will be infringed, just as they'll infringe other companies' patents, and it's all about settlements being reached.

As for Apple they are trying to traidmark a descriptive term "App Store", short for Application Store, But they may well win.

Going back to my point Amazon have really botched its new store. I got this email from them today:

At this time, we are unable to offer the Amazon Appstore for Android and associated apps to our international customers. We value our international customers and hope to make the Amazon Appstore for Android available internationally in the future.

We are actively working to serve more customers but we do not have specific details at this time. Stay tuned to our website for updates and announcements.

I hope this helps! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

The fact that that can't even give a date is just stupid, If we knew we had to wait a week then fine, Rio comes out in the UK on the 8th April so if they fail to launch it by then the tie up is a bit of a failure for the movie company and Rovio, unless they only care about iPhone and the US.
