I think it's just you! ...

Do you mean you have two programmes timer recording, and you're also watching one of those live (i.e. just tuned to that channel)? If that's what you mean, then yes, I've seen it work - you can pause, rewind etc - all the way back to the start of the recording you're making (i.e. not just back to the point where you switched to that channel).

You can also play them back from the recording library while they're still recording, as Graham suggested.

What the Humax can do, which the Echostar can't, is to let you watch a third live programme while you're recording two already. All three programmes (the two you're recording and the one you're watching) must be on the same two transponders, so it's quite a limited choice - but the Echostar doesn't give you this choice - you can only watch either of the two channels you're recording, or an existing recording.

That's why channel up/down works on the Humax while recording two (though it'll usually skip loads of channels when you're flicking through because there's no tuner available to watch them), but it doesn't on the Echostar (unless the two channels you're recording are next to each other I suppose - don't know - never thought to try that!).

What the Echostar can do, which the Humax can't, is record from the live pause buffer. So if you've watched something live, and just as it's ending someone else walks in and says "oh, I wanted to see that", you can hit record, and the full programme (if you watched it from the beginning) is immediately stored in the library.

If a programme has finished and another one has started, but you haven't changed channels, you can rewind back to that programme in the live pause buffer, hit record, and it'll be recorded.

(Yes, I had great fun playing with this because I can't do any of this on my Humax. As you say, they're quite different, and each one can do things the other can't - though I wonder how many of the technical details mean anything to "normal" people ).

Cheers,
David.

It seems to be working fine so I am loath to send it back again. I won't be using it full time until my Sky sub ends in 4 weeks.

I have noticed my fan seems to be on all the time, is this normal behaviour?

The problem with the way the Humax does it that you can be chase-playing the actual recording but as you skip over the ads and get within spitting distance of Live you get thrown out of the recording back to whichever channel you happened to have been on before so you need to then explicitly switch to the channel you are recording. A seamless viewing experience it ain't.

It has to be in a semi on state to receive the Sling requests to schedule, view TV/recordings over the network, there is a low power mode which will turn the fan off but Sling will not function.

Using the forward skip button rather than fast forward stops you overshooting the buffer. With the standard setting if you don't have at least 2 mins buffer left it ignores the skip.

I know. So fiddly to get back to Live TV on that channel.

Not if the box is tuned to the right channel. Simple enough to tune to the same channel before starting chasing playback. You can see the channel in the background when the box returns to the media list. All it then takes is exit.

But then you might see or hear a spoiler if you change to that channel after it has started recording. On my set up I would need to turn the TV to another source key in the channel by number then mute the Humax and bring up the Schedule then switch the TV back to the Humax and try to ignore what is happening behind the Schedule display while I fnd and start playing the recording then unmute the Humax.

It really does not need to be that complicated as my trusty old Topfields show.

They told me the same but the Catcher works fine with the HDS-600RS. You just have to go the to the HDS programme guide and determine which coloured buttons on the catcher remote to what and then personalise those buttons accordingly.

There's no command missing. It jsut takes time to work them out.

Just got this box and set it up. I entered a favourites list and selected it, but it does not seem to affect the Guide or the channel list that appears when you press OK.

Can anyone tell me how to use the Favourites to filter what appears in the Guide?

I had a couple of weird problems occur last night. At about 9.30 I went to watch Law and Order UK which was mid way through recording. I noticed the red recrod icon was not on the right side of the programme name in the library but the time of the recording was going up. It was clear that the box was only recording BBC! as I was able to change channel without getting a warning.

After watching Hustle I went into the ITV1 recording that wasn't recording and it was a duplicate of Hustle from BBC1.

Also, ITV1+1 seems to have just vanished from the box.

Hi folks, i'm new here, i've had an Echostar 600 for a couple of weeks now and its performed great without any problems. I bought it to replace a Humax foxsat hdr which failed, HDD was frazzled and it deleted all my recordings etc. Have to say the Echostar seems to be a more than capable substitute, better EPG, quicker response from Remote Control handset, reliable Recording. Seems Echostar are serious about their foray into the Freesat platform as a lot of the 'bugs' from early on are being dealt with through regular software updates. Hopefully it bodes well for the future with this PVR. Cheers

I also like my one. However on a 3 week trip my slingy is now uncontactable for the last 5 days even though my router is working fine. In my case it rather defeats the object. Thankfully VPN is a decent backup!

Still I'm flying back in a few hours and at least I can reset it when I get back.

well i think mines going back to amazon, having a torrid time with it missing programs, im on latest firmware, done numerous factory resets.

I set it to record , bbc breakfast on bbc1 hd, daybreak on itv hd , followed by lorraine on itv hd ,and it records breakfast ,but daybreak on normal itv , not the hd channel.

This morning i get up and see what its doing, its doing the above, so i stop itv , and try to record itv hd manually , it wont do it, says the programme you have selected has already been set for recording. Its bonkers!!!

I don't have these issues with my box since the latest sw.
Already pointed out on these forums, do a factory reset before upgrading.
This will remove timers from previous sw, that were corrupted and or the management of. This has worked on all reported issues from previous sw.

I know what you have done, this is deliberate from freesat. If you stop a recording programme, which you previously selected as series linked, it will not allow you to manually re-record it, as it thinks you have recorded it. Delete the series timer and it will work!

Yes but how do you delete the series timer? surely if you press record, and it brings up this is already set to record, theres no option to delete it? Normally when you press record on something thats set to record , it says do you want to delete etc.

Ive cancelled Lorraine to record this morning, and its recorded BB1HD and ITV1 HD , im thinking its "Lorraine's" fault

I shall continue testing, id say in the 6 weeks ive had it its faulted maybe 5 times, so its not all the time.

Signal strength is good, 99 on lnb 1, 81 on lnb 2 quality is 99 on both. 8 output lnb mind.(bribed the sky man when he came a few yrs ago )

Sorry don't follow you. If you delete a recording programme, the series link will continue, this is normal procedure.

well, I've had this box a few weeks now. first I had the humax 500gb box, then that died after 3 months (hdd failure) so I got a replacement, then that one started messing the lip snych up randomly while watching a recording so I bought the echostar despite initially writing it off because of its weird looks.

I updated the firmware the day I got it to I think 121, and its been almost faultess since day 1.

The only niggle I have is that if you use another remote for a different bit of kit, it makes the echostar forget its own remote and it wont work. It's easily fixed though by pressing OK and the right arrow for 5 seconds and it pairs the remote back up with the box.

All in all 100% better than the humax in every way, easier to use, menus are prettier, deleting is faster, it doesnt forget to record things, doesnt lose your programs.

I'm totally happy with it.

I'm approaching the end of my tether with my box!

Last weekend we were away and came back to see everything had failed. All recordings from Friday night were showing on the library but times were all over the place, channels were incorrect (Channel 4HD showing instead of BBC1HD etc). The future recordings were also wiped out.

I did a format of the HDD, did a factory reset then set everything up again. Last night things went Pete Tong again as Room 101 was recording in a folder called "unknown Program". The other show in this folder was something from the other night which was correctly titled. Room 101 was actually showing as a blank title from Channel 4HD in the library. New Girl was also recording at the same time on C4HD but we were unable to watch this as only a few seconds recorded.

Benidorm started recording on ITV1HD but would not let me play back, only letting me see the first 4 minutes, the rest seemed not to be recording. I reset this recording for 10pm on ITV1+1 but only after having to delete the next weeks series link. Looking into the library later it seems the HD recording of Benidorm DID record.

My signal if fine, connections are fine, i've done everything I can to get this to work properly. If I wasn't past my 30 days with Amazon i'd be returning this for a refund.
