I don't miss Joyce or Cully either.
No, me neither.

I think you might be in a minority. Most people seem to think it does work as the "old Barnaby" was just that - getting old. And the hangers-on didn't help either (Joyce and Cully).

I'm really enjoying the new episodes of Midsomer Murders. I like the new characters and after a dodgy first episode they are all settling in well. Dog is great too. I do wish ITV would give the afternoon repeats a rest for a while, whilst the new characters were trying to establish themselves though.

Two episodes in and I want it to succeed, but I think they are going to have to improve quickly. Midsomer Murders is light entertainment, not serious drama, so I can forgive their procedural gaffes. Less forgiveable is the way they have mucked about with the surviving characters. Jones and George seem really to have dumbed down since Tom Barnaby left and are missing things that are blatantly obvious to anybody watching. Examples? Somebody apparently commits suicide in an old racing car and THEN buries it under bales of hay? It then lies undiscovered for forty years. What were the local horses eating through all those winters? A man is impaled on a vintage car's starting handle when it is impossible to start a car in gear and George thinks it an accident? Finally, a canoeing enthusiast goes canoeing in his work suit and only Barnaby finds it odd.

Obviously this has been done to show how clever the new Barnaby is. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. The old Barnaby was very clever and we all assumed that his cousin would be as well. This is sloppy writing.

On a more positive note, I like Neil Dudgeon and I like his new missus too. It looks like she may be taking a more active role than Jane Wymark ever did. What bothers me is that when the firmly established star of a long-running series leaves, the replacement often lasts just one series before the whole thing is axed because the cement that held it together (John Nettles in this case) is no longer there. I hope that this doesn't happen to MM because I genuinely believe that there is potential for it to grow and develop with its new star, but it will need better writing. As far as I know, Tom and Joyce Barnaby did not leave Midsomer when he retired, so it is entirely possible that they may make the occasional guest appearance, but I very much doubt it would be in this series.

Don't you think these "blatantly obvious" things are deliberate as part of the tongue in cheek fun of the whole thing? Admittedly I speak as someone who never really watched the John Nettles ones much, but I am really enjoying the silliness of it all, and taking it as deliberate.

Neil Dudgeon is a brilliant improvement I think. He seems to be playing a specific character rather than a bland everyman. (Not that I didn't like John Nettles ... just Tom Barnaby did not really have any distinguishing characteristics.)

I just watched episode #2 on ITV's catchup thingy (much, much better than watching live - no advertisements) and thought it was pretty good.
I'm mystified by the apparent antagonism between Barnaby and the forensics guy and can only presume that's leading somewhere. I also can't help wondering if this series has a sub-plot of let's get the sidekick a girlfriend (presumably to kill off or endanger later? )

Finally, I'm glad the dog didn't feature so prominently this time. While it was slightly amusing (oooh look: a dog that can act!) for a while, it could get tedious pretty quickly. Plus, it distracts from the subject of the programmes. If they need gimmicks, that doesn't say much for the script.

Does the dog feature much?

Someone who likes the programme was on about it on the radio. He said he didn't mind the new Barnaby but he wished they'd get rid of the dog!

It's the 'Harvey' dog, isn't it? Not doing his Harvey tricks, is he, to help solve the crimes? lol

I haven't watched the new Barnaby, but I'm buying up all the Midsomer boxed sets (got 10 series so far) so I'm watching them in order, as I never saw many previously ... so I don't know about the dog yet!

Looks like a reunion of the Drop The Dead Donkey cast.
and I loved that programme.

I am liking John Barnaby but he's surely a nephew rather than a cousin

Well, my nephew's the same age as me, and his cousins, my daughters, are 30 years younger than him, so not necessarily

Joyce was getting to be the new Charlie Hungerford - at the bottom of every crime that cropped up!

The tongue in cheek fun is part of the enjoyment of MM, but the new episodes are not as subtle as the older ones. This along with the character changes in Jones and Bullard seem a tad unnecessary to me, just hope it doesn't carry on.

Hey!! There's only one Charlie Hungerford.

But you are right. Joyce's proximity to the crimes was highly suspicious. She was a one, could never stick to anything. One week the Midsomer choir practice, next week Midsomer art class, reading club, pottery...So fickle.

Cully's varied career path was pretty similar too and always strangely connected to the crimes...Cully the actress, Cully the Midsomer mobile librarian, Cully the travel agent...

For a Police Officer who had to deal with half a dozen murders every episode, Cully was the right name for his daughter

Have to disagree Tom was more serious as you would expect a detective to be. John Barnaby is more of a comedic character so less believable.

MM is very much NOT a procedural police drama, so in that sense neither are believable, and it doesn't matter.

I never really liked the Tom character, I think I'll prefer NuBarnaby, and I'm looking forward to a little more humour.

I like the new Barnaby, very much. I'm not sure about his wife yet though.

I have to admit I do miss Joyce and Culley. I liked the old fashioned way Joyce was a stay at home wife.

I did like John Nettles as well as Barnaby, passing of an era really. Time moves on.

Proper grisly chop-em-up murder, tonight.

Bit slow paced, though. OldBarnaby would be looking at the 4th or 5th corpse by now.

Still not happy with the relationship between NuBarnaby and Jones - still a bit too strained.

Edit. I spoke too soon. We're now up to 4
