I couldn't agree more DeanDS. I thought this afternoon's repeat episode "Vixen's Run' was far better than the latest four MM episodes put together.

Thanks for that, but it wouldn't trouble me in the least if you didn't. I try not to take TV programmes, or for that matter this message board too seriously.
However this way of looking at the world does occasionally seem to cause one ot two others a few problems on here.

No offence intended.

IMO Vixen's Run is one of the better MMs, quite typically MM, so it's asking a lot for the new ones to be as good.

Having said that, I would like it if the noobarnabee version were to heavily lay on the 'eccentric countryside' stuff , as this is when it is at its best.

Some were, but by no means all (or even a majority) a good number involved a lot of suspects and which required the viewer to keep up with the links and think it through. These were mainly the early series though. Overall I enjoyed the last one and will continue to watch, but it does risk melting into a.n.other detective show.

I'd rather they didn't make out Jones to be so dumb, he seemed less so when he was with "Barney Bee."
But maybe it's just a question of degree, because the new one doesn't seem so astute as the old Barnaby..

I agree about Jones

I enjoyed this episode. IMHO it's the best Neil Dudgeon one yet. That bloke out of the Fast Show made me laugh out loud a few times. I'm not bothered about them playing it for laughs: Midsomer Murders has always had a comedy element.

I thought this was a great episode - many laugh out loud moments with Bullard's sister and the chap who did the induction for the 'free love'.

It is very different from the old Midsomer Murders but I like both of them in different ways.
I love Sykes as a character.I love the humour of the new MM but I also like the darker side to it and the change in format refreshing. Nice to not predict the ending to be 'Barnaby gets lightbulb moment whilst talking about something completely different with Joyce and rushes off leaving her in the lurch somewhere and he just get there in time to stop a final murder'.

At least it was never like "Ironside" where in the last five minutes the "team" would talk through several situations unseen by the viewer, thus saving the production company considerable time and expense.

Does anyone know when the next episode of this is on? The scheduling seems to be a bit random!

I came to MM late (I usually do, to programmes I end up loving!)
I saw a repeat one Wednesday night, I think it was, and Thelma Barlow was in it, so that was the only reason I watched, and I really enjoyed it, I didn't think I would, which is why I hadn't botherd watching before.

Anyway, I liked it so much I thought the best way to watch them all was to buy the boxed sets, so I started with Series 1, and I've just bought Series 10. (My viewing is up to the 1st ep of Series 7) I tried watching this new lot but I don't like it at all. Not the same without Tom, Jean and Cully! And I can't see his wife without remembering her as Jackie from Heartbeat! lol

At least I know I only have 3 more series of MM to buy, seeing as John Nettles left after 13 series.

I have to disagree.

That has to have been the worst MM ever.
Total clearance on the shark pool for sure.

A stone circle that looked like it was put there no more than 1 hour ago. Joke. Inexplicable fencing with a suspect. Shotgun fired at a farmer in tractor by a policeman with no consequence. Dog growling at nasty bad guy in pub. Hidden art collection of too well known artists worth millions? Gold artefacts unearthed that looked like they were cast in china two minutes ago. It was like a sixth form end of year review piss take. Lame. Beyond what I ever thought possible.

Lacked the warmth, coherence and sence of direction of the rest of the franchise which was often ridiculous but this took it to whale jumping and beyond.
Why they bothered I have no idea. Could not even utilise the cute dog properly.

Please make it stop.

Everyone involved should be totally ashamed.

Yes, it certainly was bad, very very bad.

This was very average, still it had its moments.
In my youth I did quite a bit of fencing.
The disciplines used to be, foil, épée and sabre.
There seems to have been another one added, "Douglass Fairbanks,"
I was rather disappointed though not to see any "slashed candles."

Detective Sergeant Jones is still being portrayed as being even more stupid, to make the new Barney Bee look less dim.

And a lot less fencing.

Poor effort tonight I thought.

I agree, I actually switched over after an hour, Neil Dudgeon is quite expressionless except for the smirk. I don't dislike him but he's more suited to comedy.

Cully, (poor Laura Howard, might be the end of her TV career) and Joyce were there just to make the old Barney Bee, less one dimensional and it worked to a degree. The new Barney Bee's wife is presumably there for the same reason, but it ain't workin' and therefore it seems pointless her being there.

Quoted for truth - charmless is just the word I was looking for. Caught the second half of Picture of Innocence earlier today and it was really quite charming. Tonight's episode however... not so much.

Are we all supposed to be impressed by Jones being dumbed down for no reason whatsoever while new Barnaby is being presented as some all-seeing all-knowing superman type figure?

I have to admit I miss Tom like crazy. And Joyce, Cully and Bullard. But the new Barnaby is kind of like getting used to Dan Scott and Ben Jones, when Gavin Troy was gone. It's takes a bit of time before I can accept the new faces. The new Barnaby isn't Tom that's for sure, but then Scott wasn't Troy, and Jones wasn't Scott. I ended up loving all three sidekicks in their own right. Hopefully I can say the same about the Barnaby's.

It's only been a few episodes, I need a bit longer to see if I'll really warm to him. Right now he's just watchable, and MM is missing some of that old charm. Maybe it will develop a new charm, we'll see. I just am not sure Neil was the right choice for this. I'm going to give him some more episodes before I decide he's a complete failure.

BTW what has happened to DC Gail Stephens? her recurring status seems to have stopped when Tom left.

I tuned in tonight completely forgetting that Cornish blue-eyes John wasn't in it any more. I have nothing against Neil Dudgeon, but it was John's show and I realise now that it was watching him that I tuned in for.

I was also surprised to see Jones still in it, I just assumed that he'd be replaced when Tom left.

I'll probably still watch now and then, but it'll be sort of 'if I remember', rather than making a date to watch it.

MM seems to be used as a schedule filler. Last nights was episode 5 of 8
