The worst yet! Being country born (albeit 61 years ago) I was deeply insulted by how we country folk were portrayed. Who writes this crap and how do they get away with it? Their research is dire. Get it off our screens asap.
This particular pile was written by one Nicholas Martin. His website is here and (unwisely, maybe) there's a number for his agent. So if you wish you can phone to complain - though it won't get you far!

They get away with it, presumably, because the writers, producers, commissioning people and paymasters are all part of a clique that shares the same backgrounds, biases, ignorances, preconceptions and cynical distain for the audience that allows them to dish up any old carp - like the one in Martin's website mugshot - and assume that we'll be grateful for it. They probably do not care if we aren't, such is their insulation / dismissiveness of viewer reaction and surety of getting more work from their equally smug buddies in the future.

On a more practical note, it does list other stuff he's working on so we could save a few hours of our lives by avoiding. Nice of him to provide such a public service.

I thought the show had taken a downward turn even before John Nettles left, but I found last night's episode truly awful.
Yeah, it was always far fetched, adding a dash of humour to the gruesomeness of the murders, but (apart from Nettles), the acting was generally quite good and the plots kept you guessing.
Last night, I found I couldn't care less who the culprit was; the plot was dire, and half the actors seemingly couldn't be bothered.
If the best they could come up with to shake the programme up was to replace the old pathologist with a younger, female version, then I'm not holding out much hope for future episodes.
I'm not feeling any chemistry at all between Barnaby and Jones, either, despite their best efforts - they just don't seem to be "clicking" - that's just my view, though, of course.

I thought it started off ok, even if I had to ignore the fact that Midsomer had extended to Somerset. Jones wasn't as stupid as normal either. But then.... well it just descended into a load of rot. From great potential to just unbelievable rubbish, which is something considering it's Midsomer Murders.

A farce of an episode. I begin to think that they should have retired it decently when John Nettles left. Why such well known actors agree themselves to appear in it is beyond me (apart from the money I suppose.....but reputations are shot in the process).

Yet another Midsomer Murders involving ancient rituals , people dressing up in stupid costumes and religion. And how obvious it was that the temperence vicar would turn out to be an alcoholic..

The final scenes were as bad as it gets. So all country people are stupid and potential rapists. I realise it's supposed to be far fetched but this went too far.

I.m sure earlier MMs had conventional storylines , with just the odd one involving pagans or whatever.

Maybe we should Email ITV with a link to this thread too

I would say last nights was the worst MM episode I have ever seen. And I've seen them all.

I treated myself to a nice tin of Scrumpy cider back in 2003, it gave me a Zummerzet accent until 2006. A friend of mine who is a script writer, drank a full bodied sweet, I think he works for ITV now.
Sorry that has nothing to do with midsomer, I still enjoy it as much with Neil, I think we need to see a few more to make sure it hasn’t gone in the wrong direction. I just wish they would stop reusing actors, it may have been several years since they were someone else, but when you watch it every day (you know, when it was on during the summer) those years become a few weeks, Denise Black for example in the Stag, she is a big character (getting bigger) I find it a little annoying.

I don't dislike the new Barnaby, but this episode was an insult to the intelligence. The show will need much better scriptwriters to survive-or perhaps this is a prelude to ending it?

CHeez........what a Farce.

I was hoping they would shoot me half way through ....but it just got worse and worse and then they couldnt stop themselves over acting , over dramatising, overlong OVER OVER OVER ....make it stop .....and there is still 10 minutes of summing up to do ....:yawn::yawn:

ITs just purile SH8te .

Midsommer and the Dudgeon and writers need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Amature Dramatics meets spoof movies.

Seems Like everyone had to much of the Beast !!!!
oi! I can assure you that my Am-Dram group is better than the shite this has become.

I wonder what Caroline Graham, the writer of the original, and excellent, Barnaby novels, thinks about what they have done to her creation?

I am sure she is sickened. New Barnaby and Jones aren't even her creations.

I must take exception to likening Midsomer Murders to sh*te - that's most unfair. I recently read a book about privvies in Dorset, and the man who emptied them had the best rose garden for miles. So comparing the complete waste of 2 hours tv that was on yesterday to the marvellous fertiliser is a dreadful insult to sh*te.

I really enjoyed it, I found it hilarious escapism.

This is the only series of Midsommers that I have watched and enjoyed every episode from beginning to end.I'm certainly not missing the wooden acting of John Nettles & co.
How can you say that if this is the only series you've watched? John Nettles & Co were streets ahead of the current lot. Bring back Tom, Joyce, Cully, George and the Jones we know and love. Get rid of the current lot or MM will disappear without a trace.

It amazes me how the producers can take a group of actors who individually in other programmes have been very watchable and entertaining then deliver such rubbish as last night's MM I don't know. I felt embarrassed for Warren Clarke for what they him doing towards the end.

Who said I've never watched any of another series? Try re reading my post.

Just because you were a fan of Nettles & co doesn't mean everyone else was.

I've watched Nettles in various shows ( Bergerac etc) and have never rated him as a particularly good actor.

Best actor or not, it doesn't matter. The material he had was miles ahead of that crap last night, so was automatically better.

was it only 2 hours?
I sorta dipped in and out of it as I found the washing up far more interesting...
Only 2 hours.. I'm sure it was several hours worth.

Sorry I misinterpreted your post dome but I still think the present bunch pale into insignificance compared to the earlier series. Long may ITV keep showing the repeats.

The plot is insulting, the countryside is full drunken rapists apparantly. Murder someone because they are outsiders argghhhh. Boring, awful, stupid unbelievable plot. When did the locals all acquire west country accents. I thought the villages of midsummer were full of home counties types, mythically between guildford and oxford. Some lazy tristam in ITV must have been watching Straw Dogs for this one.
Confused the living daylights out of us, no idea where those accents came from, unless one pint of cider and you start talking like a bad Wurzel's tribute act

Gave up after 50 minutes, was mainly bored, probably won't bother again.

You could see the point of reviving the "stag" though. Most of the residents looked like they had fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down..obviously the result of too much inter-breeding.
It was complete nonsense from start to finish, but presumably (or hopefully) it was meant to be tongue in cheek ? Still, I wont be taking any chances, time to forget that little retirement cottage in the country.

Don't worry, those country yokels couldn't afford to live there anyway. It'd be full of second home owners. The yokels are all in council houses some miles away.

I really cannot understand why the same people episode after episode keep coming back to repeatedly slag the programme off.

I've said this here before and all I get is people who say 'well it is a discussion forum' yeah but this isn't a discussion thread any more it's just a bashing thread!!

Why do you keep watching it if you don’t like it?? Why would you waste your time slagging it off?

Actually I thought it was a much better episode than the last one and the acting is always brilliant from the main cast.
Neil and co are currently filming series 15 so ITV can't think it's that bad!

A totally ridiculous episode and fo what it's worth I must admit to quite enjoying it. Jones was better this time.

I still prefer the older series though

I didn't say it wasn't enjoyable. It was darkly humorous, but I'm not sure if that was the intention. Midsomer is what it is (to state the obvious)..and I don't think it has changed that much over the years.
For me it's always been one of those sunday evening "type" of programmes. Something to watch after a big lunch, and equally big tea, when it doesn't matter if you doze off.
There's nothing wrong with that, I have a soft spot for those sort of programmes.

I've just checked a list of previous episodes from earlier this year and I'd say looking back I enjoyed them all. The one with Sarah Smart for me was a stand out episode and with time flying by so fast, I had to double check that it was indeed a ND episode and not a JN one.
