Why are the two schoolgirls Welsh, and I think the debt collector sounded a bit Welsh as does Jones. I thought this was in Berkshire.

My god this bares no resemblence to the previous Midsomer Murders; dreadful acting, dreadful script, it cannot be the same production team can it. That scene in the interview room was just so bad!!

It's so dire it'll be a good book instead now I think.

Aye i hadn't realised in my excitement that somebody else had pointed out who the dog was, and i went and posted without reading the rest of the thread. Sorry.

Is he the same dog in the Peter Kaye advert, can't remember what it's flogging, but it shows a crufts type event and he's sent to get a newspaper?

Other half's got bored, and switched over onto something else.
Rednell, I loved your post - especially' the reason for edit'!!
My OH is still watching but as you can see I'm reading DS threads - much more entertaining. Have to say, I'm quite liking the new Barnaby, his dog and his relationship with Tough Guy Jones!

Love it for all it's daftness and quirky thinking!

The dog is the Harvey one isn't he?

that's exactly how i feel too.

I also didn't like the change in Jones's character. I know he would have been trying to impress but I don't think it was plausible that he would turn physical like that.

I really like the new Barnaby, the show hasn't changed that much.

I know it's a minor complaint, but at the end why would they put someone who had murdered three people, and was about to add a fourth, unhandcuffed in the front passenger seat of the police van.

It sort of summed up the whole episode for me, had a lot of potential but everything just felt a little bit off.

Not a great episode, but OK. I think the two main characters will work well together, now they've sussed each other out.

And it looks like we will see a more jokey Midsomer than previously.

I know, but MM has never been very correct when it comes to anything procedural, so pretty much par for the course.

I thought the dog was the only creditable actor in this.

I think the main focus of this episode was to cement the new Barnaby/Jones partnership more so than the murder mystery itself, I guess next episode will cement the new Mrs Barnaby and the family.

I really liked the new Barnaby - and loved his dog (made me smile when the Harvey ad appeared).

Bits of it were quite funny - all the neighbours coming round.

I don't think the story was worse than other MMs have been. They are always a bit ropey imo. A bit of miscasting with the 30 year old schoolgirl. And I, too, wondered why the Welshness?

But what on earth has happened to Jones? I like Jones, but I thought they were setting him up to get sacked he was so bad at his job in this. I hope he's not going to be set up as the klutz every week.

Were we ever meant to take the stories seriously, especially some of the later ones? This was no dafter than usual and I like the new Barnaby. The dog is adorable. I wonder if the new Mrs Barnaby will be a jinx, like poor Joyce. Every time she joined something - a choir or an art society or somesuch - they'd start dropping like flies.

I enjoyed it. Especially as there was no Joyce or Cully - although I do miss Cully's husband!

I wonder if the new Mrs Barnaby will also be a stalwart of the local painting/brass rubbing/acting/reading club/flower arranging/writing/medieval pageants/wife swapping/jam making/knitting/meals-on-wheels/naturist/fishing/shooting/bee keeping/gardening group

I enjoyed this new set-up although it has lost its "villagey" feel, which might not be a bad thing once we get used to it. The new Barnaby is fab - I love his droll sense of humour and lazy ways (eg no unpacking and the tin of beans sitting on the gas hob), the dog is a lovely touch and I had a giggle at all the touches of comedy dotted throughout.

I've never rated Samantha Bond's acting so I was disappointed to see her dragged out again for this episode, and I the schoolgirls were all a bit too St Trinians for my liking. But overall I warmed to it by the last half hour and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

I am still annoyed though that STV isn't showing this new series at the same time as the rest of the country, grrrrrr!!!

P.S. does anybody know who is going to play the new Mrs Barnaby?

They ought to have a scene where they are watching the TV, and for the dog to see himself on the adverts.

Christ, that blonde schoolgirl must have been held back a few years, eh?
I liked the fourth wall breaking reference when the first victim finds out she's a schoolgirl and says something along the lines of "I thought she was 25".
