That's a classic film and one of my favourites

That was a pretty good episode. Lot's of people with motives for the "whodunnit" brigade. A plot that moved on quite well and a fair amount of humanity from the core cast.

Best line in the show: "I'm a detective, Jones."

One of the better ones with Neil Dudgeon, still don't like his Barnaby though. At least they gave Jones a girlfriend and didn't make he seem a total prat as they have done in previous episodes. I thought the storyline was good and a very good twist at the end. I didn't see that coming.

Don't count on Jones not to appear to be a prat in further episodes.
The "dumb sidekick" is a "perennial ploy" sometimes used to make the principal character in detective dramas seem more intelligent by comparison.

Though to be fair, the former "Barney Bee" seemed often to solve many of his cases by divine intervention, as there was no evidence that we saw from which he was able to draw his conclusions.

this one seemed a decent episode for a change, just not warming to Dudgeon though

That’s a shame. Neil is such a wonderful guy. I run a website on him that he contributes to and as a way of saying thanks to me for the work I put into it he suggested I met him for a drink after a recording he did of a Radio 4 comedy ‘The Castle’ couple of Sundays ago. I spent an hour with him in the bar with a few other Midsomer fan friends after the recording. He was absolutely charming, funny and adorable. It was impossible to not warm to him.

Pretty boring. All been done before. People on a list being knocked off. One dies before each ad break.

Well, quite.

It's Midsummer Murders. That's what we expect.

That's not a bad thing.

And I much prefer Mr Dudgeon to Mr Nettles.

Did no one else groan when the killer turned out to be a "double" of the person who they thought was the killer? Up to then I'd thought it was good, but that twist was just too unlikely.

I like ND in this (I always like him anyway), and I'm glad to see Jones is normal again (he was a twit last time I watched).

Don't like Mrs Barnaby, though. Don't know why. Too good to be true?

Surely Deirdre's fingerprints would've been found on the gun that she hit her brother with? I also felt that it was too out of the blue that the trainer was the murderer. How were we supposed to guess that, given his peripheral role in the episode up to that point? Those quibbles aside, it was a really good episode.

it was the trainer
I'll be honest, I tuned in but found myself distracted by pretty much anything else.

I think that says all that needs to be said.

I did too, it was really good episode, lots of suspects and names. The ending though, not only a double, but also Barnaby linked the trainer because of one fairly common phrase.
That said ND was bearable in this ep, Jones is indeed clever again and has/had a girl. I'm quite liking Mrs Barnaby I have to say.

The whole "one murder before each ad break" thing is mentioned on this spoof

I am new to this thread.

I have watched MM for quite a few years but not from the beginning. I really only started watching as soon as Jason Hughes was cast as DS Jones as I have been a fan ot his since he was in "This Life".

I have to say I think I prefer the new Barnaby...I am also a fan of ND.

I loved last night's episode the best, Ben finally got to have a G/F and I hope they havent finished, I liked her.....

I have read through all the pages of this thread and why are people compaing this to shows like Morse, Lewis as I like all three but have to say I am more of a Morse/Lewis gal myself!

I have found MM sometimes rather daft but then thats way I love it, its not your usual "serious" intelligent cebral who dunnit show.....

9pm -11.10pm so no edit the full show with no chopped off bits because of course in 1997 the adverts were less and or shorter. Nice to see they are not chopping 10 minutes off.

I thought the programme this week was good up until the ending. Swapped identities just didn't do it for me I am afraid.
