I enjoyed this new set-up although it has lost its "villagey" feel, which might not be a bad thing once we get used to it. The new Barnaby is fab - I love his droll sense of humour and lazy ways (eg no unpacking and the tin of beans sitting on the gas hob), the dog is a lovely touch and I had a giggle at all the touches of comedy dotted throughout.

I've never rated Samantha Bond's acting so I was disappointed to see her dragged out again for this episode, and I the schoolgirls were all a bit too St Trinians for my liking. But overall I warmed to it by the last half hour and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

I am still annoyed though that STV isn't showing this new series at the same time as the rest of the country, grrrrrr!!!

P.S. does anybody know who is going to play the new Mrs Barnaby?

Loved the new Barnaby - Neil Dudgeon is rather dishy!! Also loved the dog - how cute! Okay so the story was a tad ropey but I can see only good things ahead
You so right there EP. Neil is seriously sexy. Funny how I thought that when I was 17 years old when Neil was in Common as Muck (1994) and 17 years on and I still feel the same about him.

That was a bit of a shock to the system, Jones getting all Dirty Harry, council estate drug dealers and not a vicar in sight.

Still, Dudgeon's expansion into the role across the course of the show was nicely done and, sorry Tom, but your twinkly eyed forbearance is no match for cousin John's asperity and sly humour. Here's hoping the 'recent unpleasantness' doesn't negatively affect the ratings.

Overall I think its a good start. I hope they continue with the light-heartedness and the bits of comedy. Its certainly the right way to play this. I think this can be the start of a positive change for MM. The main actors are good. Once they're in place, then all they need is good writing (the most important bit), and then keep the settings and production of the previous episodes.

I'm still worried that the recent publicity re Brian True-May will frighten the powers that be in ITV, or even in All3media, and that the programme will be allowed to wither. I hope my worries are unfounded.

I like the new Barnaby and Sykes the dog. I thought his humour was great. In a way it's a shame that he's married as it would have been fun watching all the local ladies and gentleman chasing after him.
I did miss the village atmosphere in this episode. I thought he was moving into Tom's old house but he kept saying the Robinsons used to live there?
I look forward to future episodes.

Anyone see Warner in 'Morgan: A Suitable Case For Treatment'?
Released in 1966, has it ever been shown on tv?

I wonder if the new Mrs Barnaby will also be a stalwart of the local painting/brass rubbing/acting/reading club/flower arranging/writing/medieval pageants/wife swapping/jam making/knitting/meals-on-wheels/naturist/fishing/shooting/bee keeping/gardening group
Wife swapping? The virtuous Joyce? What would the vicar say?

I think the new Mrs Barnaby is a career person, and has no time for frivolities.

Surely Tom will still live in his old house.

I wonder if he (and Joyce and Cully) might still make the odd appearance.

Yes, I've seen it on TV. But probably in the 1970s.

As for Midsomer, it was all over the place, but the new Barnaby has a nice dry sense of humour and seems to be more interested in winding up the locals than getting on with them. A strange but enjoyable start to the series.

I thought it was a nice start to the series. It certainly had a different feel to it with the new Barnaby but it worked for me.

I'm glad to see the dog played a prominent role too.

I saw it on BBC2 in the early 80s.

Very strange seeing council flats and stuff in Midsomer, a fair few Welsh accents knocking about. Apparently the exteriors were shot in and around Windsor.

I was hoping the three girls would get it on and then I remembered what I was watching

bizarre!! Were you watching a different show to the rest of us? Neil was blooming amazing!
Err..

No need for any "confusion."

Ever considered what might amaze you, might not amaze everyone?

If you liked it, I'm happy for you.

Just caught up with it in itv+1 and wasted two hours of my life, how would somebody that shot them self get out of his car and cover it with straw bales? Loved the dog though

Really didn't enjoy that. Why was David Cameron playing DI Barnaby?

Such poor acting all round, a rotten story, and none of the feel of previous series at all. Bring back Scott - at least he was pleasant to look at.

I missed most of it, caught the last part on ITV+1, so I can't really comment on the whole show for that reason, but David Warner is a brilliant actor, so well done for casting him. But to see Barnaby 'bondaged' to the ceiling of the barn was just ridiculous.

I also did a double-take and thought I was watching the PM!

I like Barnaby II.

But I didn't care so much for the story or Jones suddenly being on first-name terms with every living organism in the county (and not being afraid to kick them in stairwells).

The lack of a typical Midsomer setting niggled me. I'd prefer horrible things to happen in pretty little villages, it's the whole point of the programme. And speaking of those horrible things, just once can we have an absolute bloodbath again? Remember how great the first ever episode was? I want corpses left, right and centre...with the first murder happening before the first interval!

Too urban for Midsomer Murders.

Hopefully Jones and Barnaby will have "connected" and get on better in the next episode.

Windsor & Eton were far too obvious...why couldn't they have used some country house as the public school and stuck it in the middle of the countryside.

Not too sure whether I'll keep watching....will see how the next one fares.

The school scenes were filmed at Bearwood College, Wokingham, Berks.

I rather enjoyed the new Barnaby overall.

Anyone notice that the cute dog is the same dog that's in the 'Introducing Harvey' advert?

The gorgeous dog is definatly *Harvey*, I read an article in my tv guide, It was mentioned in that said article.

I also thought that it was a bit St Trinians, I was amazed how Jones had changed.....bit of a dimwit to say the least....

Enjoyable.

I'd watch anything with Samantha Bond in. She was even in the teatime old Midsomer episode.

And the icing on the cake was ...

The dog.

I didn't mind this show but was slightly confused when Barnaby was whacked in the head, no blood, he comes around (in a very badly acted roll the eyes for a minute) then suddenly he's fine and talking no concussion, no confusion, no bruise and then he walks out as if nothing had happened surely his bosses would have insisted he was sent off to hospital.

This scene reminded me of Penelope Pitstop when the hooded claw instead of killing Penelope he would dangle her over a pit of crocodiles and give her chance to escape, would the murderer really take the trouble to hoist Barnabv up like he did?

I did find myself wandering away from time to time it took 40 minutes for one murder and the next was just a bloke found in a car and what has happened to PC Gail Stevens has she left too?

True, but the whole programme is a sort of nineteen-fifties feel with mobile phones. Presumably that's what city-dwelling TV writers think villages and the countryside are like. Or they think that's what viewers think it's like
