That's exactly my problem as well!

I have all the boxed sets of Tom's seasons - 13 I think there are. I assumed I'd be buying the new Barnaby episodes as well, seeing as it's the same programme.
But I won't cos it's not.

Bring back Tom, Joyce and Cully!
Disagree totally. I liked the old set up but found Cully the most pointless and vapid character ever.
And as for Joyce turning up at almost every crime scene? That stopped being amusing very early on for me.

I really like Neil Dudgeon as John Barnaby but am not that convinced by his wife and am distinctly unimpressed by impending fatherhood for our main detective......

As I said before, both Cully and Joyce were there just to make Barney Bee look less one dimensional.

The new Mrs Bee, is there for exactly the same reason, but he's upstaged by Sykes.

I was under impression new side kick was a woman so kept expecting Nelson to be bumped off in favour of the other woman in the police station.

Was looking out for a tribute card to Barry Jackson, who played pathologist George Bullard for 14 series and died a few weeks ago; was a shame there wasn't one due to his commitment to the show.

Didn't he leave on bad terms? He complained he had not enough screen time and was only there to say what time they died he also moaned about the sexing up of the show since Dudgeon's character appeared.

I still watch the programme but they just don't seem to inhabit the quirkiness in the way that John Nettles did. I liked Jason Hughes and I'm disappointed he's left. Neil Dudgeon just seems to be going through the motions. I don't like the actress who plays his wife at all.
I suppose it speaks volumes that my favourite bit was Ben's postcard to Sykes (who I find to be the most animated of all of them!)

I have to say, I can,t take to this cast. I miss Jones and the medic and think Sykes looks ready to pack his rawhides and head for Dog's Trust to escape his pompous narky master and high minded insufferable mistress. Did anyone else notice that in certain lights Nelson's facial hair had a distinct Adolf quality to it?

Really enjoyed the Xmas episode. It's been a long time since an episode has kept my attention throughout.

Nice to see Hannah Tointon in this as brilliant as ever.

I agree with many others on here. I really miss the old cast and the quirkiness of the series. The new line up and the programmes are very ordinary.

I think thats it... I dount very much I'd be watching repeats of this show for many years after they originally aired... I've barely made it through a single episode of the new version.
I don't think the cast are particularly bad or even that the stories are not "Midsommer" like but is "something" missing that I can't put my finger on.

I agree that Cully was an incredibly pointless character although I dind't mind Joyce so much.

Add me to the list too! Just not the same, the humour is different/lacking

Both storylines and acting are somewhat underwhelming too - great pity that a great series should slowly fade away. Pity it didn't finish when Tom retired.

I'm not a regular viewer but I caught this one. I have liked Neil Dudgeon in other things such as The Street but I didn't enjoy his performance in this. Perhaps he has been miscast.

Just watched the episode again on the ITV player and have to say that I think Gwilym Lee's interaction with Neil Dudgeon is great so far. They didn't give Lee's character Nelson much time to shine in the first half of the episode, but this won't be a problem when Barnaby becomes more at ease with him as they work together more. There was the hurdle of Barnaby and the viewers missing Jones to overcome here, and while it looks like a lot of the people commenting in this thread haven't really warmed enough to Nelson, I still think he'll settle in fine. He'll have more of a chance now that the ice has broken. To be honest I didn't like Jones as much as his predecessor Scott, so I didn't have a problem accepting Nelson here. Liking what I've seen of him so far and I think he fits in fine.

Are you me?? I didn't watch until late, I just assumed it was one of those run of the mill mystery series. Watched one and the tongue in cheek humour set it apart. I also have the old DVD's and really enjoy them. (although not so keen on Troy).
Ha! Just seen this post!

I tend to get into a series late, I very rarely watch something from the start! In this case there was an episode on that had someone in that I liked so I watched it for that reason, and I loved it instantly!
So I watched from then, and bought the past series boxed sets and watched from the beginning!

I honestly believed this new lot would be the same cos it wouldn've been the same scripts with Tom and family, but I just cam't get into it.
And I liked Joyce and Cully. I can't take to this mew wife. I liked her in Heartbeat, but .... no. They just don't work as a couple for me like Tom and Joyce did.

Oh well, there'll always be those Tom Barnaby episodes to watch and enjoy!
Tom certainly had a quirkiness that this one doesn't have. He really DOES seem to just plod through the motions. He had more life in him when he was previously in as a guest character/suspect!

I don't understand why Joyce, Tom or Cully can't make guest appearances they still live in the village persumably Joyce still takes part in any bizarre rituals that go on in Midsomer.

I still wish they had found out she was involved in the previous murders and Tom had covered them up to protect her.

Watching an old MM on ITV3 (series 10).
It's like a comfy pair of slippers watching this compared to the new lot.
It's just not the same without Tom!

For me, without Blue Eyes Nettles, there is NO Midsomer.

I must be the only person in the world who has never watched MM. I just never have however I think I saw the trailer last night ...... Is it the one with the Secret Sisters song? I listen to their music when I'm out walking. Love that track.

It's just so strange, cos if John was still doing it, there'd be the same scripts they have now, but it's just like a completely different programme, to me, with a completely different feel.

I'd never seen the episode that was on last night, before. Joyce and Cully were in it, but they never 'jarred' like the new one's wife does. They just fit in in the scenes they were in.
And just the whole family feel is different.

I'm actually sorry about that cos I do enjoy this programme and, as I said, with it being the same setting, the same scripts, just with a different boss, I just assumed I'd enjoy the new ones just as much, but try and I do, I just don't!

Very true. Whether it is because there are new faces on the production side, or because the present actors just do not suit the characters I don't know, but the 'old' cast made every episode interesting. The 'new' cast fail to maintain my attention - almost as if they are just going through the motions and have no belief in, no empathy with, the characters. Strange I know, but perhaps miscasting is the issue.

I'm sorry to disagree with the above, but I switched off last night because it was so boring!

I vastly prefer the new set-up. In terms of wives, the new one at least has a personality, unlike dreary Joyce.

I gather the pregnancy storyline was forced on the writers, but it is interesting, which is more than Cully's employment adventures ever were. And the dog is great.

I'm really looking forward to tonight's episode.
