No, he made a point of saying that he had sterilised some bottles.

Oh dear. After nearly 20 years Midsomer Murders decides to go shakycam. Unwatchable for me and no doubt a sign of things to come.

I tried to watch this, but it seems a bit dated. Yet I enjoy "Endeavour," strange that.

I think anyone who watches Midsomer Murders hoping for a fact-based drama series is probably watching the wrong show, though.
Fair enough, but having a best-selling book printed, bound and distributed in 2015 without the text ever being entered into a computer? Oh no, he always worked on a typewriter with a cigar and a bottle of vodka and then the book was printed using hot metal in a local barn. So how did it get edited, designed, proofed, sold into shops, etc? Come on. There's enjoyably implausible and then there's complete and utter bollocks.

ecuase to buy into midsmomer you have to accept that its a county caught in a time warp.where people hold grudges for generations and everyones garden is perfect and council estates don't exist

And receptionists, librarians, bricklayers, teachers, bar workers, carpenters, etc can all afford to buy picturesque thatched cottages.

These are becoming very tedious.
Very dry scripts and quite silly storylines.

This is intolerable. The only thing that made enforced Midsomer Murders viewing bearable was Hot Welsh Sidekick. Now I've been deprived of Hot Welsh Sidekick and I'm not happy about it.

Oh but Endeavour has Roger Allam, who sparkles up even the competent but bland Shaun Evans.

The stories are good, well most are, and Bright(Lesser) is a delight to hate. The last cliffhanger was idiotic.

MM, on the other hand, has Nettles (presumably a talented actor) with too long cuffs, smarmily solving mysteries with no help from poor Troy (we've only just gotten Hopkins here) or his fellow officers, who bounces when he walks, and otherwise makes my teeth itch.

I put MM in the category of something to watch until I nod off, since it is televised Sominex. Works every time.

Opening the printing press (by turning the wheel) without wearing gloves drove me mad in this episode

Sykes still the best actor!

But if he'd written it on a computer, we would have lost the "death by hot metal printing press" and Midsomer would be a sadder place for it

I mentioned "cliffhangers" in the "Spiral" thread. Ooo! Some are a bit sensitive over there.

I can't think of cliffhangers without thinking of kids' filmed serial dramas. Where you see the hero actually falling off the cliff at the end of the episode. In the next it starts with him miraculously hanging by his fingers to the cliff edge and he manages then to clamber up again.

Thursday is likely to return with just "the traditional arm in a sling," nonsense.

I believe Nettles solved all these Midsomer murders by each week discovering clues of which no one else was aware. My only conclusion is that everyone else missed them as well as the viewers as they were perfectly obvious in the fifteen minutes of the programme cut out for the adverts.

I hate to use the phrase but MM has dumbed down a bit, the sykes wanting to go out and the baby cooing is not in the same league as Joyce wanting to go out but Tom was too busy.

They desperately tried to make the viewer believe Una Stubbs was the killer but any regular MM viewer could see a mile off we were being set up for that thought.

Just something magical is missing at the moment from the show.

I noticed that when Barnaby was outing the killer at the end, we didn't get to see any flashbacks of the killer bumping off his victims. Previous series' used to show said flashbacks, but that didn't happen this time. Now that I think about it, last year's series didn't have any 'climactic flashbacks' either (except maybe in the Wild Harvest episode).

I have to say that the finale of a Midsomer episode feels quite dull without those flashbacks, unless say you have a tense stand-off between Barnaby and the killer. But this episode didn't have that either.

The magic has definitely been missing in some of the post-Brian True May episodes. Here's hoping that the rest of this series picks up in quality.

Agree with both, Gwilym always reminds me of the guy out the Wrong Mans (not James Cordon!) Sykes is the best though!
That would be the lovely Matthew Baynton ( formerly of Horrible Histories)! Sykes is great and so glad he got his walk!

I think anyone who watches Midsomer Murders hoping for a fact-based drama series is probably watching the wrong show, though.

One of the highlights for me is always the brilliantly inventive ways they come up with for murdering people.
Neil Dudgeon said in a magazine interview last week that when someone is murdered by a roulette wheel you know it's not Scott and Bailey!
Loved the printing press. Great effort by the make-up/costume people there!

Now you mention it, I did find the ending a bit dull and I wasn't sure why but, you're right about the no 'climactic flashbacks'.

New Mrs Barnaby joins local historical society.

She's turning into Joyce.

Probably to give an insight into the historical cause for the murders.

It was always ridiculous when Joyce joined every society going, but it helped to give a connection to the crimes.

The bald guy in tonight's episode who's having an affair with the magician's wife- he cannot act.

And Barnaby's sidekick Nelson is rather hot.

The magician's wife and the bald guy are not very discrete.
