That's rather useless isn't it! When it comes to programmes not on the BBC, I try and record where possible so I can fast forward the adverts. Watching on ITV player forces you to watch adverts.

One of the reasons why they are trying to get people to watch on ITV Player.

I've just seen the same! Surely that must be a mistake as why wouldn't they leave ep 2 up for at least a week? Maybe they took it down in error at the same time as ep 1 was taken down....

I've just sent them a message via their website so I'll see if I get a response.

Same for me. Since I first got a HD box in 2010 (I now have Tivo) I've never watched any non-BBC programme 'live' I always record it and watch it afterwards so I can f/f through the adverts.

I haven't watched this episode yet. I'm never in a great hurry to watch them, though I do before the next one's on. I just don't like MM as much without Tom!
I like Neil as an actor but for MM he just doesn't fit the way John Nettles did.

I think it is either a cockup or a glitch, if you do a search on the results page it shows two episodes one from last August and one from January , it says there is one ep available but shows both listed as being unavailable and if you click to go to the Midsomer page it tells you it cannot be found

From @itvplayer twitter account this morning:

… Midsomer was available on the player. Unfortunately, it has been removed for legal reasons and will not be republished

I didn't see it this week and was already recording Wolf Hall and Castle on C5 at the same time.

Legal reasons? Mysterious. I don't have Sky but I've got VirginMedia's TiVo - haven't checked on there. I guess I'll just wait for next week's now anyway as have got other shows to catch up on.

Another tweet says it was removed due to licensing and will not be re published. Odd.

I have just had an email from ITV Player which states that due to licensing rights, all Midsummer Murders have been removed and will no longer be available for catch up....someone has screwed up bigtime.

How can Midsomer not be on the ITV player at all? It's their own show. Surely they have the legal rights to their own shows

Depends what you mean by 'their own shows':
The Great British TV Sell-Off: who owns the UK's favourite shows?

Bentley Productions is the company behind Midsomer Murders. That company is a part of All3Media, who were taken over, last year, by Discovery Communications and Liberty Global.

Not sure if that has anything to do with Midsomer Murders not being on ITV Player at the moment, but it does muddy the waters a little .

I was given the 'licensing rights' answer when I e-mailed as well. When I then sent another e-mail asking whether the licensing rights might be renewed, I was given the exact same answer as before.

It's a strange situation. All of the Neil Dudgeon episodes have been put on the ITV player immediately after broadcast, but now it looks like that won't be the case for the rest of series 17.

Hopefully this will have the effect of encouraging people to tune in as it airs and increase ratings. If it achieves the opposite and people start tuning off, that would be annoying. Since 2012 there have been only 4 new episodes each year (compare that to 9 in 2010 and 9 in 2011), so I feel that ITV is less enthusiastic about re-commissioning the show these days - let's keep tuning in and not give them a reason to axe it.

But, until the technology changes, many people will carry on recording commercial channel programmes and fast forward through the interminable ads.

Even if they watch 'live' I suspect many viewers use the 4-5 minute slots to do something, anything to avoid looking at the ads.

I've got next week's ep set to record already - don't want to watch live as it clashes with Wolf Hall at the moment.

That's frustrating. We're on holiday next week and since we unplug everything before we go, won't be able to record it. And we're away Wed-Wed so that'll be two episodes missed

They must be keener on MM than on Lewis. They show MM in one go, cos it's a '2 hour' show. They show a 2 hour episode of Lewis over 2 weeks since they brought it back.

No, they're saying watch it 'live' or record it to watch later (like I do, so I can cut out the ads).
I could never sit through a 2 hour programme with ads anymore.

Me neither.

As to the lack of "catch up" on ITV player, this isn't new regarding Midsomer Murders as I missed one of the last series as I was on holiday, and when I came back it wasn't on catch up. Emailed ITV player and they came back with a reason of "limited time available" and said that it was available but for only for 3 days after transmission.

I asked them, via twitter, what will happen with the remaining episodes and they have said:
… the remaining episodes should be made available as normal.

So it's only been last weeks episode which is not available? When I come back my holiday I should be able to watch the ones I missed? I wonder what the reason behind this is.

I think their programmes are normally only available for 7 days - would be nice if they were there longer like the BBC iPlayer.
