The ratings look good for last nights episode. Nearly 6 million

Only one thing annoyed me though - the absolute star of the show didn't even get a credit at the end. Why?????
Harvey/Sykes/whoever did steal the whole thing - maybe he'll be the new producer of the next series
Sykes, the pooch concurrently known as 'Harvey'!!

I am astonished that the wee guy doesn't already have his own appreciation thread here on DS.

Slack work...

I found it strangely disengaging and the storyline was rubbish imho. And why has Jones become dumb as well as violent? The absolute star of the show was of course the dog!

Ah, his real name appears to be Sykes.

Well he at least deserved "Sykes - Himself".

Wonder was he called after Eric or Bill.....?

What name does Harvey/Sykes have in the show? Was it given, or did I miss it while I was mesmerised by his cuteness?

Just realised we are spending more time talking about the dog than the actual episode. Speaks volumes, that does!

He's a bit confused...he is, of course, named after Melanie.

He likes Boddingtons.

How many adverts are ITV allowed to interrupt their programs?
With product placement ITV and other broadcasters were allowed to increase adverts to 16 mins per hour!
The original Midsomer Murders running time without adverts etc around 10 years ago was about 1hr 42 mins.
The last John Nettles one runs for 1hr 29mins. So Thats an extra 13 mins of adverts etc in 2 hours!

On the back of a couple of the guest cast being MM 'regulars', I've had an idea for the way forward. How about a regular cast, as a sort of repertory company of MM eccentrics. It might be fun guessing just which older nymphomaniac character Samantha Bond would play each week.

Plus, why is Jones acting really stupid ?
Just what my OH said and if Barnaby was so clever, how come he went to the barn and let the old man nearly kill him.

For those keeping count, I spotted one person of Asian ethnicity.
Wasn't the schoolgirl who found the first body with her bit of rough boyfriend non-white???

It's PC gone mad I tell you!!!!!!

I think the dog is the one with the Psychology Degree, I was half expecting him to turn up like an episode of Hong Kong Phooey, as the cat spot and save the day.

I've never watched an episode of Midsommer Murders before now, I've never rated John Nettles and the premise of the show never grabbed.

I like Neil Dudgeon though, always enjoyed stuff he's been in since he played Cattermole in 'Piece of Cake'

Couldn't sleep last night so I watched it on ITV player, it didn't pull any trees up for me, but it was watchable enough. I can see myself dropping onto the Player website to watch again when I'm at a loose end.

The only thing that irritated me, like other posters have commented on, was the 'evil' schoolgirl. Every time she came on screen, not only was I thinking how shocking an actress she is, but how stupidly old she looked for a schoolgirl.

Couldn't believe she's only 22/23

She was in St Trinians, so presumably she got the gig because she already had the wardrobe.

Loved the dog though

When Jones kicked the debt collector I thought we had slipped into an episode of Life on Mars.

That's the 3rd time Samantha Bond has been in Midsomer, does anyone know if she was playing yet another character? I think she was a different character the other 2 times.

Personally, I didn't enjoy it as much as the old ones. It didn't feel the same, the scenery was different and Jones seems to have changed character somewhat ! I'll give it a go though, and hope it improves. Missing John Nettles already.

Do you mean in a Murder She Wrote, Cabot Cove way with the same main characters in the same village?

I really like John Nettles but thought the new Barnaby was good too.. a good transition episode and I also think that Jones will be back to his 'role' next time... Like the dog too.

I like it. Especially the dog

From my perspective....BTM has tried to maintain the philosophy whilst at the same time changing the "Barnaby" role. Looks like the new Barnaby is going to solve all the cases in the background whilst Jones does the legwork and gets it wrong.

It was dreadful. Some of the acting was woeful and even "Jones" had forgotten how to act.

The dog was the best part of it at least he wasn't wooden and stereotypical.

No, I meant more like Rep, or a sketch show. A small group of actors playing different roles each week. We already accept such as Samantha Bond reappearing in different roles. Why not have her, and a core of other popular actors, in every episode? The Rainbird son (Richard Cant?) could come back. Some weeks they'd be victims, some weeks they'd be the killer and some weeks they'd just be a suspect. Regardless of which role, they'd of course be very eccentric and heavily involved in adultery, blackmail or whatever the 'sin of the week' was. I expect that a lot of viewers could accept this and quite enjoy the joke. It could even be a Unique Selling Point for the series. How do I go about pitching this?
