Actually, they were pretty p***ed with him as they expected a few more series. He decided he just wanted out and left them in limbo. That is what I read somewhere, then again, it could have been a dream
![]() Just because they were annoyed with the actor did not mean they should have handled his departure in such a slap-dash and unprofessional manner. |

Has it not occurred to the Daily Mail that these characters are not real people, they are being played by actors who just happen not to all be the same colour?

I am watching series 16 now. Or at least I think it is. Sarah is not pregnant yet.
I notice that the Barnaby's drink wine every day we see them at home. I dont drink alcohol, so I dont know if this is common? |

Probably not common, here, but nothing to worry about if they just have a small glass of wine apiece, each evening. Even the rather absurd 'new' guidelines would allow that. |

Maybe because it costs so much, and we can not buy wine or anything stronger in regular stores. |

Nelson isn't scruffy he just isn't in a suit like Jones was.
Still, I'd much rather Nelson remained more "casual" and didn't go for the "open-necked shirt with no tie" look, as that truly is scruffy. |

Rewatching Last Year's Model on ITV3 right now. It's better than some of the Neil Dudgeon ones, sure, but it's nothing to write home about. The bit where Barnaby reflects on the little girl saying "Bye Mr. Barnaby", in slow motion, is especially grating...
By the way, there's a black actress in this episode. Taking this episode and Orchis Fatalis at the very least, there clearly WERE non-white actors and actresses in the show before the previous producer made those comments in 2011. The racism allegations were completely unfounded. |

Another bit in that episode that annoys me is the same girl repeating its because i don't believe Annie murdered mum. That is repeated several times in the episode

(Just quoting from the FB page)
NEW RECRUIT FOR MIDSOMER MURDERS DCI John Barnaby will have a new sergeant at his side for the forthcoming series of Midsomer Murders which starts filming this week. Neil Dudgeon (DCI Barnaby) returns to film another six feature length episodes of the hugely popular ITV crime drama and this time DS Jamie Winter, played by newcomer Nick Hendrix (Marcella, The Crown), will be beside him upholding the law in Midsomer county. Also returning for the 19th series of the successful drama, made by Bentley Productions (part of All3media) for transmission in 2017, are Manjinder Virk as pathologist Dr Kam Karimore and Fiona Dolman as Sarah Barnaby. Storylines this series will include a deserted village full of secrets, an extreme Neighbourhood Watch, a cricket festival and a rabbit and guinea pig show... Jo Wright, executive producer, said: "All the team here at Bentley feel it's a great privilege to be filming the latest series of Midsomer Murders, and especially to welcome the talented Nick Hendrix to the family. We are sure he will help Neil Dudgeon keep as many people as possible safe on the dangerous streets of Midsomer County. " Nick Hendrix says: "I'm genuinely thrilled to join this bastion of British TV. It's a real privilege to be part of a hugely successful and much loved show and I am looking forward to stepping into the wonderful world of Midsomer." The last series of Midsomer Murders, which aired on ITV earlier this year, averaged a consolidated audience of 6.4 million with a share of 25% - its highest share since 2009. It has sold in over 220 territories and is a top rating show in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and France. Midsomer Murders is produced by Ella Kelly (Coronation Street, Doctors) and executive produced by Jo Wright, managing director of Bentley Productions. Members of the writing team include Lisa Holdsworth, Paul Logue and Jeff Povey. Nick Laughland, Renny Rye and Matt Carter will be among the directors. Further details of guest casting and the stories to be depicted in the new series will be available closer to production. |

I see they're really being daring with the casting of another white 30-ish male as Barnaby's DS. He may be perfectly fine as the new sidekick, but couldn't the change have brought a woman or, heaven forbid, an ethnic minority actor to the role? It seems fairly unrealistic that the Barnabys (both) have moved to the fifth DS who still fits all of the young, single, white and male 'job requirements'. ![]() I've only briefly seen Hendrix in the Marcella series … he wasn't in it very much, being definitely dead by this week's episode (Maddy's unfortunate boyfriend, Adrian). Apart from that, I'm glad to know they're filming, although I was losing interest in the last series and I can't remember if I watched all of them. |

This seems another desperate attempt to attract some viewers. Neither this nor the previous Barney Bee, had much personality, both are pretty wooden actors. That's why Joyce and Cully were originally included to make the original one seem less one dimensional. Over the years various sidekicks were used and we saw less of Joyce and particularly Cully, who eventually was reduced to "just a postcard from her." In this series we've got the dog, whose acting skills outshine the rest of the cast. Still, it's a harmless bit of an evening's entertainment for some, with no annoying CGI or despite the numerous murders, too much gore. Probably favoured by "women of a certain age" and I don't say that as a disparagement, just an observation. |

It still entertains me in a similar way to Death in Paradise - highly implausible, but usually fun. I suppose they have stuck with casting a younger actor as the DS as they feel having someone around the same age as the DCI would automatically make them too similar for the viewing public - despite the fact they could have polar opposite personalities. And they've also stuck with a single character, to date, so they can have 'interesting' romantic sub-plots now and then (I'm suddenly wondering if the new DS will be gay). Don't forget we have a dog *and* a baby now. I'm not so dismissive of the principal character's acting abilities as you, but there's always baby Betty - more of a toddler this series, I expect. |

So what has happened to Nelson then? Was it the actor's choice to go or the production team

Yes, I wondered that too. Being naturally cynical, I suspect the marvellous "newcomer" is also a lot cheaper.

I'll be sad to see him go, I liked him
His twitter feed doesn't give much away: "Alas and alack, I'm afraid its true that I won't be back on the busy murderous streets of Midsomer this year. I've moving on to pastures new" |

It's a shame. He was growing on me. I can understand why an actor would want to move on from that role though, let's hope it was his choice.

To be fair, the "side-kick" is only there as a foil to make Barney Bee seem more intelligent and to provide a bit of eye-candy for women viewers.
Poor old Jones was made to look a right duffer in some episodes, totally out of character. Likewise, years ago, Cully had a succession of different jobs to suit various plots. |

I liked Nelson and it's a shame that he's leaving. Apparently the Daily Mail are claiming that the new DS is being introduced to lure fans of Poldark's shirtless scenes!

Shame - I really liked Nelson but they could really do with backgrounding the new DS and giving him some sort of character!!

It's all pretty predictable but harmless entertainment. |

But none of them ever have. It'd take away the attention from the lead character. They're there just to make "Mrs Badley's chauffeur," (a roll to which in my opinion, he was better suited), look good, apart from as has been said providing a bit of "eye-candy" for female viewers.
It's all pretty predictable but harmless entertainment. You did learn a bit about Troy and Jones though - wiki has a bit of info about their characters whereas Nelson's is one line!! |

I hope they at least offer some explanation as to where Nelson has gone. I hope he doesn't suffer the fate of Dan Scott who had a tummy bug and was never seen again, or the woman constable then later detective who helped out Tom Barnaby and Jones in Tom's later seasons and then disappeared when the new Barnaby turned up.

Very happy that they cast a man as the new sidekick.
I just need him to be in a suit, then all will be well. ![]() And the awful pathologist with the severe underbite can be the first murder victim
