I hope they at least offer some explanation as to where Nelson has gone. I hope he doesn't suffer the fate of Dan Scott who had a tummy bug and was never seen again, or the woman constable then later detective who helped out Tom Barnaby and Jones in Tom's later seasons and then disappeared when the new Barnaby turned up.
Yes, I thought (hoped) they were feeding her in to act as sidekick to Jones. Sadly not to be, an excellent opportunity missed to revitalise the show.

Perhaps she - and Nelson - have also ended up in Brighton with Jones and Kate

Sounds like a recipe for a new series - The Brighton Murders! : )

Maybe, I know he wasn't everyone's favourite but I quite liked him. No one could replace Troy or Jones easily but he wasn't too bad. I even liked the scruffy look
I'm also sorry to see Nelson go. I didn't like him when he first started, but soon grew to like him.

What I particularly liked about Nelson was that he seemed intelligent, able to think for himself and take the initiative without being spoon-fed by his DCI all the time - something that Troy didn't really do. Jones grew into that, but then again he was brand-new to CID when Tom took him off the streets (well, off patrol duty at the house in the woods, impressed by his initiative in managing an incident - and ownership of a suit & tie!) I never really liked Scott. He resented being posted to the countryside in the first place, thinking it was below him.

I think it'd be nice to see some of these ex-DSs turn up from time to time in guest roles, like that one brief surprise cameo appearance by Troy - who still didn't appear to have done his driver training!

Sykes has retired!

A new younger dog will out-act Barnaby in the next series

Meanwhile, we across the pond are still being shown the same old same old Nettles and Hughes pairing. Heck, even poor Mr. Jackson is still alive.

Who is holding on to the new ones over there? Or is PBS too cheap to pay for them?

I like Nick Hendrix, and his Jamie is everything I wanted it to be. Unlike the scruffy Nelson, this one wears a nice suit and tie.

As the old Barnaby told sergeant Scott in "Second sight": We are dealing with people in grief, wear a tie!

Did they give a reason for Nelson leaving and/or Sykes?

Nelson is on attachment with some sort of undercover operation and Sykes died

I thought the US rights are owned by Acorn TV as they have continued to release on both DVD and blu-ray (a format we don't see for MM in UK) in US.

Am British but my understanding is Acorn TV is a subscription TV streaming service of mainly British TV shows. They also own US rights to Foyles War amongst others plus I believe their parent company now own or share TV and film rights to Agatha Christie including all the new shows now being made by BBC.

Have read that Sykes is still alive in real life so not sure if he was too old for filming or they just thought he no longer added to the story.

Does anyone know why Gwilym Lee who played Nelson left ? The digitalspy article just said being replaced after end of last series and before filming started on this one ? His IMDB profile shows no work post MM so did the producers sack him, as doesn't look like he moved to anything new.

My mistake, I should have made it clear I was talking about Sykes the character rather than the dog who played him

Apparently

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwilym_Lee

In April 2016 it was announced by ITV that Lee was not returning for season 19 of Midsomer Murders. Lee, on his Twitter account, indicated he would be involved in an upcoming series Jamestown_(TV_series).[6]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown_(TV_series)

Sykes is it appears basically now retired

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sykes_(dog)

I haven't watched the latest ep yet but there will be a new dog

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-...he-dog-retires

There are big changes ahead for the Barnaby household when Midsomer Murders returns for a new series next year.

DCI Barnaby and his wife Sarah will welcome a new rescue puppy called Paddy into their home when series 19 of the ITV drama kicks off.

Paddy replaces Barnaby's former canine companion Sykes, who hung up his lead and retired at the end of the last series after five years on the show.

Thanks!

TBH am not sure if I'll watch it, I liked Jones & Barnaby and Nelson & Barnaby but I don't like new coroner or Barnaby that much and have no idea about this new DS.

I'm catching up but although I like the original, I couldn't stand his irritating wife, the new ones better. Didn't like the love story between the new detective and the forensic officer? She was so wooden. Dreadful choice. Hope she's not in it when I catch up.

What a vivid imagination you have. Can't help feeling it would pay to concentrate more on the actual script though. They weren't at school together. They were on the same police course for a short period.

Thanks for the info, we did wonder if Sykes had popped his clogs. Glad to know he has retired.

The new dog went to school and plays golf? He's even cleverer than Sykes!

I think this is more "afternoon telly" as was "The Coroner," and "Dr. Blake."

The plot was ludicrous, as if the MOD would have held on to a village in a rural area surrounded by all the other "Midsomers," for seventy years. The strategically placed ammunition boxes and jerry cans reminded me of the props used in Strictly Come Dancing.
Still it was harmless entertainment,...of a sort.

Neil Dudgeon should get back to chauffeuring, the limit of his acting capabilities.

Just caught up on last episode, was worried Sykes had actually died but much reassured by recent posts saying he just retired, very much enjoyed it, yes it was daft but that's what I love about mm if I wanted gritty who dunnit I wouldn't be watching mm.

They could have just said something like, he was away on tour and they'd had a postcard from him, just as the old Barney Bee, said of his daughter Cully, when she'd been missing for several episodes.

I always spend far too much time spotting familiar faces in MM and then thinking about what else I've seen them in.

Enjoyable though, if a bit bonkers.
