Samsung SMT - S7800 Freesat PVR 1080P

Still keep getting told that all known bugs whether reported or not have been fixed and to take it to a service centre where they will do full diagnostics and replace my unit for a working one
Exactly the same strategy with my box. They collected my box Friday, so will see how it goes. I was told my freesat is the first one to return to service.

I powered my one up a couple of days back....
Did a format of hard drive and ran setup again.

Set to make lots of series and single recordings....

1st one I played back was coast from BBC HD - end cut off
2nd one Family Guy ok
3rd one, the next Family Guy had the end cut off.

The only single recording it made was Silver Streak along with six short recordings...

All other single recordings gone

Also last night it would no longer receive BBC1 HD or BBC HD saying "Cannot receive this programme. Please check connection".

Pressing i twice for signal levels showed both level and quality at zero.

However, after a freesat scan they worked again....

What a heap of junk....

Automan - mine did this too - very annoying didn't record 2 things cause of it.... BUT I think this was Freesat changing transponders yesterday for BBC ONE HD / BBC HD - just not very well publisised and I forgot. Well you would wouldn't you - you'd expect the box to deal with it.

Did a channel scan and all is well this morning. They did say you "may" have to do this... but surely the latest set top box on the market should have dealt with this.

Indeed, I thought the auto freesat scan should have done that and of course more so on the latest "state of the art" freesat+ box

Anyway, 15 minutes on the phone and they still insist the box needs an engineer...

So I agreed only later to find out it is not going to Samsung but some bunch called RepairTech.

I would guess a maximum of 14 working days.

I just tried my reference number on the repairtech website.

It returned

DPD just collected my box for its trip to repairtech....

Checking the samsung website under my service status it says...

customer has been experiencing difficulties with recording on the product with cvarious recordings being deleted. Customer has completed the firmware update and the problem is still ongoing.
That is of course not 100% correct...

I did attach to the S7800 a list of issues...

Repair Reference xxx

Non series link planned recordings sometimes vanish from Library / Timers after unit has been in standby.

Sometimes after the unit stops recording it will make several 1 second recordings from your current channel.

See drive contents

On channels that support accurate start signal, if the program runs late the unit seems to stop recording at the scheduled time rather than after it actually finishes.

e.g. recording of Coast and second Family Guy episodes

Some recordings are saved with no program information.

If connected to TV using HDMI via my 3D ready Sony A/V amp I get no audio unless on the amplifier I set it to send HDMI audio to TV – then I get no DTS-MA or other advance sound formats playing back blu-ray discs.

If you load the Media application from a channel with Dolby Digital sound (HD Channels) you will not hear any of your music. (work-around – exit media player, select a non HD channel and try again).

Media player only shows the first 100 matching tracks or artists when browsing.

Audio glitches playing back HD recordings every so often.
Anyone got there one back from repair?

I phoned Samsung this morning and mine is getting collected on Monday. Apparently mine is also the first one to be sent for repairs due to this problem lol.

My box is returning home soon. Just got an update from the repair company saying that they re-flashed my unit and it now looks like everything is working. I am just curious what firmware version they used. Possibly some new beta firmware from Samsung... will let you know what version I have got after I get it back. It should be this week, hopefully.

Mine is back now. Firmware ver.: 0.39/1.43. Software ver.: 003.000.0273. Is this what u got as well?
Tested media not seeing all files... NOT fixed.
Will post back when I got some time to test for the rest of the problems, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

There are two reviews on the Samsung site stating their boxes are working fine and there is another on Amazon saying the same. Is there anyone out there who can confirm that they never have any problems with programmes being deleted from the shedule when the box goes into standby? Did all the early adapters get shafted with broken boxes? Mines getting picked up on Monday to be sent to the service centre, not confident that I will be getting a working box back.

I am sure that a company like Samsung with their first freesat box will get it right witin 6 months from launch. I wonder what will be out there then, YouView boxes?

Sending box to service is the last thing you shall do. If the software is not working properly with broadcasted data, nothing can fix that but the software update, which was promised to be launched in June. Adding/removing resistor or capacitor will not change the algorithms.
Unfortunately, no reasonable workaround for timers deleted after exit from standby for the May software. If I have something to be recorded (and is not a part of series), I turn off the TV and leave the box turned on.

When I turn my tv off then the box automatically turns off as well.

Re the Amazon reviews of this object.

Only one is positive and this could be for many reasons.

e.g.
It actually works.
He works for currys.
Never puts it in standby.
Has since found out it is crap but has not updated his review.

I also see it is now only £230.00.

Had a look in the settings of my TV and Samsung but cannot see anything with regards HDMI control.

I'm suprised Freesat have let Samsung release this box with their branding on it. Samsung are not only damaging their reputation but also Freesats.
