Hi,

Had this box a week, after ditching Sky. Anyway, I can't see that this has been covered; basically I have the box plugged into my Av receiver (Denon AV1507) via optical cable. On my Sky box, connected the same way Dolby Digital programs made the display on the Denon say "Dolby Digital" but with the Samsung it just sticks with "Dobly ProLogic II". I have the digital sound switched on in the sound menu and the internal volume switched off. Is this normal?

Thanks for the response.

I checked everything, firmware is latest, signal is strong, but when scrolling right to tuner two, nothing happens like there is only one connection, but there isn't/ I have two cables coming from a quad connector to the box. One works fine, so why wouldn't the other one?

If yes when you press the Info key it should in the top left corner display the channels currently being recorded.

Pressing info a two more times displays the "Tuners Info" showing Tuner 1 then press right arrow to show Tuner 2.

Are you getting signal strength and quality on both of them?

Also, did your box upgrade to the latest firmware during install (takes nearly 30 minutes to download).

This should be version 5.0.300

Check the f connector on the faulty tuner is fitted correctly. What happens if you swap the cables does the first tuner then indicate no signal ?

New reply...

Quote:
“Please quote your customer reference number when contacting Samsung.
Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I am sorry to hear you are having difficulties with your Samsung
product, can you please take the following steps to rectify the issue;
A replacement remote has been ordered and you should receive it within
the next 10-12 working days.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and
we will be more than happy to help.
Kind regards,”

Even if you do not use the Samsung remote with your TV you may wish to check it is ok.

Just hold down the TV button (the one that lights up green).

After 5 seconds it should start flashing so you can enter a TV code.

If it just stays green you have a remote control from a duff batch.

Thank you!! That seems to have done the trick

One other question though is the signal strength for the second tuner is at around 20% - Is that normal? The other is at around 80%+

Seems I have one of the duff ones. Spend ages reading, re-reading the instructions trying to program the damn thing...

What's the best way to get a new one sent out? I always dread speaking to helplines.... and going through 30 minutes of troubleshooting for a problem they actually know all about....

I've recently bought a Humax box and I'm not that happy with it, so I'm considering replacing it with the Samsung box. The Samsung Freeview HD+ box looks far better than the Freesat HD+ box mainly due to having Smarthub - but is then ruined by only being able to record one channel.

Basically if the SMT-S7800 had Smarthub and the networking features of the Freeview box, it would be my perfect choice. Can you tell us if this is what is in store Mediabod? I'm sure the box is capable of it, but it feels like this is Samsungs test machine, and they have no obligation to add features like this even if they can. In fact most companies will add features to later models on purpose to increase sales - which obviously makes it tempting to wait a little an see if a new model comes out.

Has this been improved with new firmware? I thought the Humax was bad at around 30 secs! Though I understand that get around this by have a "pretend" standby.

I assume you've set Dolby Digital / DTS to 'on' as shown on page 52 of the operating instructions.

Hi,

I’ve just joined the forum having bought a Samsung SMT-S7800 about a fortnight ago.

As mentioned by a number of posters above, my remote also had the “non-TV code entry problem. When I registered on the Samsung site I used the contact system to report this and was amazed to receive a rapid reply telling me that a new remote would be sent out - this duly arrived in about a week and is able to have the code for my Sony Bravia entered without difficulty and works a treat! Superb service from Samsung Customer Care.

The SMT-S7800 is a delight to use, excellent EPG and great picture quality on HD material, SD is not bad either. Recording two channels at the same time is brilliant.

Today I had a strange problem in that the display screen on the front panel went blank, just the blue light showed and changing channels made no difference to the display but changed the TV channel as required - very odd! Maybe I inadvertently set it to blank but I don’t know how. Switching off, disconnecting the mains plug and leaving it for a short period and then plugging back in and re-booting cured this and I now have a channel info display on the front panel as originally. Very happy so far. Any ideas as to what I did, if it was my fault, would be welcome to prevent it happening again.

Thanks for reading so far.

I've tried to find an answer to this but as yet can't find it so here goes.

With the STB in standby (Blue light only)....

If I turn the box on with the remote it comes up with booting etc but doesn't put my Samsung TV connected via HDMI on to the correct input. The only way to make it do that is to then turn it off with the remote to the Blue light and clock mode of standby, then turn it on again with the remote, this time it turns the TV on to the correct HDMI source input.

Is this behaviour normal ?

Surely went you turn the box on it should always switch the TV to the correct input, even my cheap and nasty Freeview recorder connected via scart does that !

Any comments or advice please as we are going to buy another for my mother but I need to sort out this as she is not overly technical and it will be a lot of messing around before she can do what is simple with her freeview box at present.

Cheers

Scart sockets have a dedicated pin for auto selection (its very simple and universal). HDMI uses cec control which is not universally supported. I am imagine the Samsung does not have cec. It works best between kit from the same makers eg Sony to Sony, Panny to Panny.

Just for info it is a Samsung TV connecting to the Samsung HD recorder so I assumed that it would be 100 % compatible, mind you I was told once by an old work mate,

Never assume, it makes an ASS out of U and ME.. (Old Joke)

Further to this question, can anyone tell me what the CPU and RAM in the S7800 is? And can anyone give me a link to anywhere that Samsung has said the box WILL be updated to the G2 standard rather than just being capable of it?

I don't think there is one... If they had said it, it would without a doubt be the best Freesat PVR to buy right now, rather on on-par or slightly better than the Humax.

I tried the Humax Foxsat and the SMT-S7800 next to each other instore, and the Samsung was better, it also looked better and was cheaper, and MAY be more future-proof. Isn't that reason enough?

I have recently bought a Foxsat HDR and I've tried a Samsung, so I agree with you and I'm in the process of selling the Humax - but with YouView and G2 just months away I'm tempted to wait and see before buying the Samsung.

Sky are offering me 12 months at half price which I don't really want to do, but will allow me to watch the F1 next year. I think in 12 months we will have a much better idea of the direction of the different TV platforms and that there will genuinely be a next generation of STB's available. The S7800 seems to be CAPABLE of being next generation - but only if Samsung want it to be.

I have the same problem with 'channel selection' that some users mentioned earlier in this thread.
When trying to select a channel, I get a message saying "channel unavailable" or similar. I can always get the channel in the end by selecting another channel first and then re-selecting the channel I want.
Did anyone find a solution to this problem?

Thanks

Perhaps low signal level?

This unit does not seem to have the most sensitive tuners...

The Sky At Night...
Compared with my Humax it would seem a Series Link for this machine never works for a program that is on once a month.

It does not list ones that don't have a matching program in live guide data so it is difficult to tell what it does with old ones...

Hi guys
Anybody else getting this on "My Samsung" webpage ?
See the screenshot:

ScreenShot

It only displays "There is no data" for the SMT-S7800. For my Samsung TV, it works ok.

I've never seen the message "There is no data", although my product is registered as SMT-S7800, not SMT-S7800/XEU.

In my first post on this forum above, I asked "Today I had a strange problem in that the display screen on the front panel went blank, just the blue light showed and changing channels made no difference to the display but changed the TV channel as required - very odd! Nobody replied so I am none the wiser but my front panel display screen is now blank most of the time - just the blue light shows on the front of the SMT-S7800.

I have the latest software update and have tried a factory reset but the problem remains. Power saving is off. I can live with it by using the info button on the remote and looking at the on-screen prog. banner but when using radio I have the TV turned off so this is not so convenient.

Anybody else had this problem or got any ideas for a cure please?

Seems like not software related problem, probably faulty front panel. I remember one of the forum users has had a problem with the clock on the front panel.

I'm expecting my Samsung to be delivered today, but I've just read something a little disappointing. Post 37 here from the Director of Product Development at Manhattan Technology:

http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/index.p...-hd-s-due-soon

Quote:
“Anyone that’s bought a Samsung expecting it to do Freesat G2 will be extremely disappointed. An ST7108 is required for YouView and Freesat G2 and both Samsung and us are using the ST7105 for our freesat+ devices.”

A suppose comments from competing manufacturers should be taken with a pinch of salt, and it is at odds with what Samsung say here:

http://www.astra2d.com/august11.html

Quote:
“Samsung has confirmed that its SMT-7800 Freesat+ HD recorder can be upgraded to the forthcoming G2 spec.

Warren Hampton, Samsung UK's general manager of home networks, told Wotsat that the SMT-7800 was built with Freesat G2 in mind.

The ST-7105 chipset is capable of meeting G2's processing needs, and there's a built-in CI+ conditional access slot for channels who want to add pay-TV services, he said. 'We could add G2 as a software download,' Hampton added.
He hinted that Freesat G2 might also allow Samsung to add its Smart TV Hub to Freesat products, which it's not currently able to do.”

I'm not too bothered as I've tried the Humax box and I hated it, so there wasn't too many other options right now - but I wouldn't be surprised if I sell the Samsung too within the next 12 months when the more powerful boxes are released.
