New dish - no. Just google the key words I gave you
Well, no edit option available, please focus on quad LNB, I'm not sure if dual would work. Maybe someone else can help you with detailed information, i'm not an expert too

@Susan

I'm using the dish that my SKY+ used and it is just a normal Dual lead output and this works just like Sky+ on my Samsung S7800 allowing the recording of more thna one program at once whilst watching one I've recorded.
Yes you CAN just replace the LNB's on a dish to quad LNB's if you ever need more than just 2 feeds in the future.

Anybody tried upgrading the HDD in the SMT-S7800 ?
Wondering what sort of file system it uses...
Mine still got 4 months warranty left, but I would try sticking a 1 TB hdd after

Not tried a bigger HD in mine but can't think why it wouldnt be possible to install a bigger drive.

I'd opt for NTFS as you need that to store files bigger than 4gb on it. I'm pretty sure I've copied a 10gb movie from USB key to it so that kinda rules out FATS16 or FAT32 which is limited to 4gb max file size.

Or change the LNB to an Octo one, if need be

Generally pvrs use the linux EXT3 system. NTFS is a Microsoft proprierty system and they do not release full details without a full licensing setup. EXT3 is fully documented in the public domain. In any case take the Foxsat-hdr, remove the exisiting drive, stick in a suitable sata drive up to 1TB and the box auto formats it for you. Couldn't be easier. Basically on the Foxsat none of the OS is on the HDD it's all in NVRAM. DVDR recorders are entirely different part of the OS is on the HDD, disc upgrades are very hard. If the Samsung is different then coupled with the lack of HDD archiving of existing content to usb then if you wish to upgrade you bought the wrong pvr.

I wonder if it has a Samsung hard drive in it?

With luck a virgin unformatted drive will work and the unit will format it in on the first power up.

Automan.

Upgrading to a larger drive would be interesting if it's feasible as the Samsung allows you to copy XVID (AVI) files to the hard drive.

I stand corrected ...on the EXT3 ... it was just an observation on the 4gb+ file size led me to the NTFS.

I've never felt the need personally to upgrade a STB HDD so haven't actually gone the through the process.
I've taken many a HD out of an old Sky box though and placed in a pc set-up then f-disk'd it. So never actually looked at the existing file format beforehand.
Cheers Mr 'T'

I guess more of the issue will be the global shortage of hard drives and the massive price increases....

Good informative advice from Amorok and is a given that we all must be using the latest Firmware.
However I've been using the "5.0.300" since day of release and last week I lost all my library entries. Following the advice on previous posts this was easily repairs a by a factory reset of the S7800 box. Of course all upcoming timer recordings had to be re-added after reset.
So I feel the latest has NOT fixed this problem which is a real shame because for me this box has been a real SKY+ beater up until this point.
I't my be helpful if you guys on here repost if you have lost your library after the latest 5.0.300 upgrade otherwise it would seem according to the help and answers page Samsung feel the problem has been rectified with the latest firmware.
I really want this sorted as after being a SKY customer for 17 years I would hate to have to go back to them a with my tail between my legs and admit they are the only ones that can provide a service that can at least do the basic service of RECORDING a program and KEEPING it for us ..... at the moment I feel it's a bit of a lottery whether when I come home my recorded program may or not be there for me to watch and this is fundamentally not good enough
Come on Samsung fix it and let me finally recommend you to my friends and family.
I had a company on the phone the other day who were booked by samsung to come and pick up my box for repair as my library was mostly wiped after the box crashed while i was rewinding a programme. I tried the reset but there was no difference i lost 10 tv series and the strange thing was out of the 6 i had left only one recording was left in each folder.Samsung arranged the collection after i told their customer support that i was already running the updated firmware and had been since it first came out so Samsung must be aware there are problems with firmware at present. I knocked back the collection to give the box another try but what i have done this time is to reinstall the firmware by USB rather than OTA. lets see how it does this time.

Straight from the makers sealed bag/box.
Just stick it in the machine and with luck the box will do the rest at power-up.

I would be interested to hear how the SMT-S7800 handles a replacement drive if you try it. I have a spare 2TB internal drive, but my interest in upgrading the box is for XVID (AVI) files which at present I play on a WDTV media player.

However, for me, there's no point in upgrading the drive until or unless Samsung sort out their XVID playing which for many files is juddery (video and audio) and consequently unwatchable. So far, I have received no reassurance that Samsung will fix this or, incidentally, the BBC iPlayer lip sync problems.

Also transfering files over via USB sticks is a tad laborious!

I've found that as long as the Xvids are dead on 25fps that you can eliminate jerking from film content etc., but as far as playing 30fps etc., is just no good. I have a feeling the wdtv live (and things like boxee etc.) actually change the output frame rate on the TV to match, rather than trying to (badly) convert the frame rate.

Saying that even with 25fps there is still a slight lip-sync issue, and only mencoder seems to do a good enough job. And iPlayer - yep - very bad.

I guess if hard drive prices are on the rise (some by 50%), a product like this will also rise in price...

It would be helpful if Samsung specified the 25fps restriction - and fixed lip sync! I understand that Virtualdub will change frame rate without full processing (Direct Stream Copy) so it only takes a few minutes for each file. However, I've still to prove that.

I agree that transferring files via a USB stick would indeed be a "tad laborious", even using a 64GB memory stick and with multiple file selection. Maybe, sadly, it's easier to play them off the computer using the Windows Media Player server.

If this happens to me I'll return the box to Richer Sounds and give SKY a call as I need a box that just "just Works"
I've only ever used the USB method of update so not sure it will make any difference to the issues you/we all are having.
On a side note I have an iPlayer app on my Samsung d7000 TV and this HAS worked flawlessly for me so far, I have to admit so I've not tried the iPlayer app on the S7800 although you would think they would both be similar in performance.
The Samsung TV also plays all formats of movies I have tried flawlessly too ..... so this MUST be software issues on the STB S7800.
For reference (in streaming terms) my broadband speed averages at 12.0Mbps

Indeed, iplayer works better with the built in version on my LG TV and a better resolution.

Lately I have found CHN4HD guide data never seems to populate with only about the next four programs listed.

I am still having problems with Channel 4 HD.

The EPG never seems to populate for this channel and I think this may be causing recordings done by series links not to occur.

Anyone else having this problem?

I emailed Freesat and they replied saying the EPG is working correctly and to call Samsung.
