Thanks...
eBay sellers may also have bought them for the £30.00 cash-back deal... Automan. |

I was interested in buying this Samsung model but after reading this marathon thread I don't think that I will bother!
I was a little puzzled as to why newish models were appearing on eBay,one only used for a week with a genuine reason for sale!No prizes for the real reason. Anyway,a big thankyou to all that have contributed especially Automan who deserves a medal for the hours put into testing and answering all the queries, etc. I'm sure that others have made the same decision as myself and this thread again warns of the pitfalls of buying new products before they are really sorted out. There are too many companies that use buyers as their free test agents and their brand names no longer carry the weight that they once did. As regards ebay there are all sorts of reasons that folk put things on there. I think the 1 you quote is being sold as 1 week old but oddly that seller doesn't have the box or a receipt, so the good reason for selling may be that he/she doesn't want to be caught in possession. |

I think you're being a little harsh on the Samsung. I've got one and a Foxsat HDR and I don't think there's much to choose between them. Also a lot of people who come on to forums like this do so because they havea problem and aren't necessarily representative of the whole population that own that particular item. If anyone had followed your logic during the early days of the Foxsat they wouldn't have gone within a mile of it but that would have been a mistake. With input from folk like Automan and others on this forum the box has been improved immeasurably by Humax.

It's got a more up to date feel than the Foxsat-HDR and doesn't have its quirks (such as you can't record the whole of the programme you're already watching, the Foxsat's jerky menuing system and its strange 30 second silence accessing the EPG). However I can't compare the Samsung to the Echostar which seems to be rated by its users. |

Apart from one issue with temporarily losing library contents (which I retrieved with a reset)... as a PVR its working pretty well for me as it is . BUT I am looking forward to at least one more software update from Samsung to set my mind at ease about the occasional library issue. If they did that I would have no problem recommending it. |

It's the extras that have the issues - like media player and iPlayer - but the box is no less reliable than my Sky HD box that went before it - even after it had a new hard drive and power supply. And those "extras" weren't available on the Sky box. I guess Samsung outsourced the development to a set-top box manufacturer - and maybe Freesat caught them off-guard with it's quirks, compared to a bog standard satellite box. Automan's web site - http://www.morlocks.co.uk/Samsung_Freesat_Bugs.htm has a finite (I think) list of ourstanding stuff. I know some of the issues are actually restrictions imposed by Freesat too I think. |

My Samsung S7800 has recently decided to stop recording programmes and sometimes does not display channels either. This started about a week ago. Anyone else had this problem?

If Samsung would just sort out this bloody library issue then this box would be perfect

I was really tempted by getting one of these boxes compared to the Humax but the major downer is that it would appear (from posts on page 4) that you cant copy video files to an external HDD to play on a laptop.
I know with the humax you can copy and play the SD videos ( not sure about HD) but can anyone confirm if the samsung can or cannot do this. thanks |

To confirm... You cannot copy any recordings off of the Samsung box. Automan. Quote:

If you are working away somewhere with internet access then a Slingbox could be the answer for you.

Ironically, what I want is exactly the opposite of that. I record on my study desktop (with tuner card and Windows Media Center), edit using VideRedo and copy (rights permitting) to my WDTV media player in the lounge. I had hoped that the SMT-S7800 could replace my WDTV media player. Although it's a good PVR, it's capabilities with XVID files are rather limited and it certainly could not replace the WDTV. I have also tried the Freeview Samsung BD-DT7800. In my opinion, it's a good media player with a very smooth GUI and a lot of Smarthub content (not just YouTube as with the SMT-S7800), but, sadly, it fails abysmally as a PVR. Despite having two tuners, you can hardly do anything else except watch another TV channel while it's recording. If Samsung could put together the best of these two boxes with DLNA access to a NAS drive, it would, in my opinion, be a most impressive device. But I'll probably have to wait for something beyond YouView for that. |

Dear all,
Just read the entire thread again as I had read it before purchasing. I can't seem to find anything mentioned about the problem that mine seems to be suffering from. When watching live or recorded stuff there is no problems but when turned onto standby it seems to reboot about every couple of minutes; it continues to do this until it's turned back on. Firmware is up to date. Any suggestions or is it time to get on the phone to John Lewis? Cheers Upto date firmware. |

Does Freesat have a search function?
I usually use this on Sky to find out when a programme is replayed to avoid recording clashes. Thank you |

Not heard of this one before. How is it connected to your TV? Is the TV still on while the rebooting takes place? Which TV do you have? If connected by HDMI does it go via a AV amp? If yes, which AV AMP? Automan. Quote:

Thank you for the responses regarding search. Saw this on the freesat website and I'll be contacting Samsung once my box arrives to see if they plan to implement these features on their box. Quote:
Solves a recording clash http://www.freesat.co.uk//what-you-get/freesat-plus
Some freesat+ boxes check through the 8 day On Screen TV Guide to find you an alternative time to record if there's a clash. Look out for this feature on the Humax, Grundig, Goodmans, Sagemcom and EchoStar freesat+ boxes. Organises your recordings into folders Some freesat+ boxes help you organise your recordings, automatically storing them in folders. This is ideal when you've got so much recording space to play with. Look out for this feature on the Panasonic, Sagemcom and Humax freesat+ boxes. |
