as an aside, moving from sky hd, to freesat, is freesat hd a little more... dotty/grainy in its picture compared to sky?

Hmm interesting, I just saw a presentation about upcoming YouView public beta, and guess what the one of the STB's was demoed with... The Samsung SMTS-7800.
Looks like the lack of noise on the SMT-S7800 is because Samsung, Freesat and YouView partners have been hard at work. |

I thought Youview were just going to roll out on Freeview first with Freesat to follow?

Come on Sammy, help out your supporters - or should we wait for apple to bring out a stb?
£1000 only works with small screen TVs Apple have to vet all the programs to ensure they are of the correct quality. The first generation won't record that will be saved for iSTB 2. They will sue Humax saying they invented pressing schedule and red to get the guide up. Apple are soooo crap. |

Where did you see that ??
I could have been the freeview one, but I'm 99% sure it had a freesat logo on it... I'm guessing both are in testing... |

I'm sure I'd read somewhere someone saying the processor wasn't up to the job of YouView? Wasn't it the Manhattan bloke when he was blogging about their new Freesat PVR due out with a slightly higher spec processor (although same manufacturer)?
Be cool if he's wrong though - presuming will get software to upgrade to it. And would be a really good reason for no updates recently, and worth the wait I guess! |

Just picked up this machine from Richer Sounds (£199) after my Humax FoxSat died. Assistant said that he's had 3 or 4 returned due to the disappearing recordings bug.
Great thread, very informative, thanks to you all. |

I thought you preferred the Samsung to the Humax, Thunderquaker. So why not a Samsung next time?

They'll fix it, just as Humax did with their PVR bug. Annoying in the meantime though.

Hooked it up - picture seems more vivid than the Humax - which is good as far as I'm concerned. But that could just be my eyesight. Remote works the TV - good.
Just got to fix the BBC iplayer lip-sync issue and I'll be happy enough. Is there a quick fix for this issue? Haven't recorded anything yet so can't comment on those bugs as yet. |

OK, I don't have a login for that site. Any details on what the update will include?
"Because of the way programme information data is updated whilst the device is in standby, occasionally some of the information is not completely gathered, and therefore is not displayed when the device is switched on. We are aware of this issue, and are currently working to provide a software update, to enable the programme data to be displayed much faster. A fix for this issue will be available in the next software update, scheduled for the 2nd May from Samsung’s website. An ‘Over-the-Air’ download will be available from the 4th May." Cheers |

After playing a round a bit I prefer this box to the Humax. Far more intuative menus, more responsive and more asthetically pleasing too.
However, the iplayer lip-synch issue is very poor. Also, however I try I cannot log into my youtube account. I've got around this by using the iplayer built into my telly (Panansonic TX-L37G10 - no lip synch issues there) and can log into youtube with no problems via my home cinema system (Panasonic SC-BT230). However, I shouldn't have to do all this especially as the STB packaging and STB itself is clearly marked with BBC iplayer/youtube logos. One further issue - having a few problems using my Harmony 300 remote with it. It controls the box fine once up and running. But when using the 'Watch TV' green button to switch TV/Amp/STB on it doesn't work as it did with the Humax. With the Humax the TV/Amp/STB all powered up correctly. With the Samsung the STB fails to power up fully. Does it need one prompt to 'wake it' from powersave mode (for instance, if it's been on standby all night) and then another to fully turn it on? Also when using the same 'Watch TV' button to turn everything off - it does that - then turns everything back on again. Anybody else use the Harmony 300 (or other Harmony remote) with this box and had similiar issues? |

My sister is loving her box. No issues yet. The only problem has been a known bug on the remote and Samsung are sending a free replacement.
She is also loving not paying Sky £40 a month. I have sold all her old Sky kit for £50 so the net cost to her for the box is only £106. |
