Is anyone experiencing the issues below. I've got a reply for each message asking to perform a reset and update which hasn't resolved either issue.

Quote:
“It's apparent that there is a bug in the latest firmware that wasn't
there with the firmware that ships with the box.
When I first purchased this freesat box without updating the
software/firmware I added free to air channels in non-freesat mode via
the manual and auto scan options available.
However today with the latest firmware installed I wanted to add the
newly launched free to air channel 9XM in non freesat mode. I correctly
entered all of the correct details (frequency etc) and after he scan was
complete a message displayed stating 5 channels were found so I selected
save. However none of the 5 new channels were in my all channels list.
I tried again and the same result making sure there was a signal and
checking the frequency etc.
So I then performed an auto scan on the Eurobird 1 Astra etc etc
satallite. Hundreds of channels were found, and when I saved them NONE
of them appeared in my all channels list. Ssaved channels in original
firmwere added to all channels li”

Regarding my last point only two channels were added to my list. I believe as I've mentioned to Samsung that this is a bug as in the original firmware all channels found via scans would be saved.

My second issue:

Quote:
“Hi,
There seems to be a bug regarding the EPG in non-freesat mode.
When scrolling through the EPG via the up/down arrows to check what's on
other channels, programme information for the previous hour is displayed
not what is currently broadcast. (Pressing right shows the programme
currently being broadcast.)
There is no such problem in freesat mode.
Thank you
Regards”

I exclusively use non freesat mode so I no longer have to switch modes when I want to view a fta channel not available on freesat as freesat channels are also in non freesat mode.

I've responded to Samsung on both issues stating a reset etc hasn't worked.

There's also the issue of programme information missing in the guide. Example this Thursday evening Channel 4 HD is blank in both freesat and non-freesat mode and based on similar occurrences for other channels in the past, the programme schedule will load on the day of broadcast.

Am I correct thinking that the May update will correct this issue?

Thank you

I got so sick of issues with my Samsung SMT-S7800 I took up Amazons offer of a full refund. I asked the question about the May update and this was the reply....
"Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I am sorry you are having this issue with your Freesat box. I
understand that this can be frustrating.
We cannot fully confirm the update will resolve these issues. However,
it is likely that they will fix such problems.
Hope this helps."

Sadly that didn't help so I think I'll wait and see what happens and perhaps they might bring out a new model soon it's about time.

Hi frasersoft,
What did you say to amazon to get a refund? How long had you had the box? I am thinking of returning mine (different store though).

Cheers

I explained that it was impossible to get through to Technical support and Amazon had already replaced my 1st box within a couple of weeks. The problems I was having all related to playing back recordings including locking up when fast forwarding etc etc. The box that Amazon refunded was about 5 months old and I have to say they could have not been any better in their response. At one point customer service at Samsung organised a repair but when I spoke to the repair company they could only guess as to how long it might take to sort the problem out so I cancelled it.
I also spoke to the Executive Office at Samsung HQ but they were totally inflexible as regards replacing the unit and said I had to take it up with my retailer which I did.

5 Stars for Amazon customer service...........

Folks I have this STB and my TV is a Sharp LC40LE831E. Does anyone know what the remote control code is for this TV?

I've tried all that are listed under Sharp in the SMT-S7800 manual, but none of them work. I've also tried using the first option (learn) but after about 40 minutes or so my hand got tired and I gave up!

Any advice welcome. Many thanks.

What is so good about this box that there is a Thread about it, what can this box do what others can't?
And no it cannot output in 1080P because no broadcaster except the BBC broadcast in this mode, unless it is the Menus that are being transmitted to your TV at 1080P
or one of the BBC channels

Like the Freeview-HD boxes it can de-interlace and scale so yes it can ouput 1080p. There's no 1080p on satellite including the BBC. Some Freeview-HD output is 1080p25.

I'm sure that others do similar things, but I've chosen this Samsung over the Humax Foxsat-HDR, of which I've previously owned two, because its EPG handling is so much better. I have to say I liked the Humax, but, in my opinion, it's more of an enthusiast's box, potentially enhanced with unofficial software.

You don't have to interrupt the programme you're watching to have a look at the EPG with the Samsung. The sound goes on and the picture reduces to a small window. The Humax loses both sound and picture when you access the EPG and then the sound suddenly breaks in after thirty seconds. It's only a niggle and there may be a non-intuitive workaround, but the Samsung seems to do things the way I expect it.

The Samsung allows you to record the programme you're watching from start, assuming you've stayed on the same channel. The Humax doesn't do this.

I have found navigation to be smoother, but certainly not perfect, with the Samsung. Moving up and down the Humax programme guide was always a bit jerky. Again it's not hugely important but it gives a better user experience.

I have used a Logitech Harmony as the remote control with both devices, but, in the case of the Humax, I would not have managed with its supplied remote which I considered let the box down badly.

Channel changes are handled as they happen without any fuss or overnight delay with the Samsung.

The Samsung's main problems for me have been lip sync and other problems with AVI (XVID) playback, which is not available anyway on the Humax. The BBC iPlayer also gives lip sync errors and the ITV Player isn't available at all, but both work on the Humax. A problem with temporary loss of the recordings library has been widely reported on this forum, but, for some reason, my Samsung has never exhibited this problem - I don't know if it's my box or the way I use it.

I've now abandoned the Samsung for catch up services and media playing and use my Bluray player for that, as it supports more catch up services and far more video formats for media playback using DLNA. I use the Samsung now just as a simple freesat PVR and it gives a good user experience. If the software upgrade materialises in May and addresses some of the software problems others have experienced, the Samsung isn't a bad PVR.

Can anybody help????
I have just bought a Samsung SMT-S7800 to replace my Skyplus HD subscription. I have connected the two feeds from the sky dish and used the same HDMI cable as was used by the sky box. My Samsung TV recognises the new box as seen on the source list but when i select the connection i get 'NO SIGNAL' on the TV. I reconnected the sky box and it still works fine.

Anybody have any ideas why there is no signal?

Thanks in advance,
Dan.

The Foxsat-hdr has the same capability except that the picture is full screen behind the epg (the transparency is adjustable). There are two ways of accessing the epg.

Guide - downloads a new epg from the freesat home transponder from scratch (missing from the Samsung box).

Displaying the schedule and then the guide by pressing the red button does the same as the Samsung.

If you have owned two it's pretty surprising you don't know this, I have only ever set recordings this way since 2010.

The Foxsat-hdr despite being older is way more advanced than the Samsung especially when used with the Raydons and others firmware add ons.

Yes the Samsung can record the buffer it can't however archive recorded content to USB. The Foxsat can (and with the above firmware it can record the buffer and HD is then not encrypted), The two are related, I know which I would rather have .

Many of the remotes in the box aren't actually programmable (they included the wrong ones..)

Does the light blink like the programming instructions imply they should? If not, then like I had to, contact Samsung and they will send you a replacement remote in the post.

Graham, I attempted to be even handed in my response... and I mentioned the non-intuitive workaround to which you're referring.

The later S7800s do have ITV Player.

I don't find it non-intiuitive. It makes sense to me to check what's scheduled to record before checking the epg for anything that's not scheduled. At the least it picks up screw up by the broadcasters in the series coding.

You didn't mention at all the loads of extra capability the Foxsat has over the Samsung so hardly even handed. To be fair you did say it's more of an enthusiasts box, but take the case of a non-enthusiast stuck on a single connection on a communal dish. The Foxsat offers two tuner recording, the Samsung does not.

I have owned both boxes and still have the Humax HDR and find both of them have niggling issues and both Samsung and especially Humax seem very reluctant to address these.
The support I received from both companies was very similar and to be fair if Samsung's update in May addresses the issues I was having I will go and buy another one as I reckon the picture quality is better than the Humax.
I use a Logitech Harmony 785 remote that controls all my kit and find once you crack how to program it it works very well.

It could be duff or perhaps your dish is a little out of alignment.

Can you try it at a friends?

On first setup it looks at eurobird to get the guide and if the dish is not quite right it may not get the signal.

Another thought, will it let you pick non Freesat mode and then search for a signal on Astra 2

Automan.

It's 5.0.302, later than the version that is posted on the Samsung website. Only comes on the new boxes as far as I can tell.

Does this version have the iPlayer and media player lip sync issues resolved?

Can't answer that I'm afraid. Although I tested the box in London when purchased it's currently installed in my apartment in Catalunya, where my Internet is 3G only.

How long have you had is box and does it suffer from the deleted schedule bug?

I bought it in December and I've not noticed it doing anything weird with my recorded programs, although I do turn it off properly when I'm up here in the UK so it gets regular resets as it were.

That is a very small change in the software version number so perhaps the change is quite small and perhaps released by mistake?

Lost the library again last night. Another reset and re-scheduling of all shows I wanted recorded. I have also noticed that a couple of them have disappeared from the schedule as well (before the reset, of course), TopGear from BBC HD for example.
I also asked Samsung what is their understanding of "coming soon" in regards with ITV player, given that my box is almost out of warranty, if they plan to add any more apps other then Youtube and when are they going to correct old bugs like disappearing library, not being able to see all your network media files, etc.
Typical Samsung response yet ****ing again:
"Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I am sorry you are having this issue, however we have had no
confirmation as of yet to when ITV player will be on the Freesat box. O
nce it arrives, you will probably get a software update via your Freesat box.
Hope this helps
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and
we will be more than happy to help."

I had enough Samsung for the rest of my life, I think.
