I was thinking of IR from another device but the box seems to only use the same code for on and off so I would expect it also to turn on by itself.
Automan. Logitech list these when they are available for the Harmony remote range. Other buttons sometimes can be used, for instance pressing zero boots the Foxsat-hdr pressing zero when it's on is ignored. In this case zero acts as a discrete power on command as does 00 and 000. Because the box sometimes misses the first power on command from a remote using a macro sequence of 000 boots the box every time. |

Hmmm, it does seem to be a very mixed picture and somewhat contradictory, it must be easy to confuse just which effect is causing what problem in some of these cases. Not quite what I had in mind with scientifically verified effects!
Just to explain further, in my case we ONLY use incandescent lamps no low energy at all, also, this effect occurs when using the Samsung as a radio tuner through the HIFI amp, in daylight, no TV is switched on in the house, no lights, very strange. Nevertheless if I get the opportunity I will try your suggestion of taping over the IR receiver with black tape. Thanks. |

Very perplexing, two boxes doing the same thing does sound very odd. How about the ethernet port. I have a full remote control on my laptop for the Foxsat, it's easy to turn off the box using the network connection.
Interestingly, this is my second Samsung, the first did not have this problem but the front panel LED display failed so there was no visible information. It was replaced free of charge. |

Nothing connected to the ethernet port just HDMI to TV and audio cables to Naim Audio preamp - power amp. Preamp does not have IR remote facility, it's too old!
Interestingly, this is my second Samsung, the first did not have this problem but the front panel LED display failed so there was no visible information. It was replaced free of charge. Turned out two neighbours both had video senders with the same settings, they were controlling each others kit

The Olympics channels appeared on the Samsung EPG automatically as new channels always do and the channels were accessible. However, the Olympics genre did not seem to appear on the Guide front menu automatically.
Consequently I performed a re-scan and the Olympics genre then did appear. Was there a simpler way to get the Olympics genre... if it matters. |

Smt-s7800

Just bumping this question. I'm sure someone out there has their SMT-S7800 connected to a Samsung Anynet+ TV. It would be really helpful to me if anyone with such a set up could advise whether selecting the HDMI-CEC STB connection form the TV's source select menu causes their Freesat box to automatically switch on if it wasn't on already.
Thanks. I have the same problem and have found Samsung Support a waste of time so far. Has anyone come up with an answer? |

It doesn't work. You have to take the stb out of standby using the remote or the button on the box itself.

Recordings being erased
Hope someone can help ...
Despite resetting to defaults (something I have to do far too often when there are problems with recordings), my box frequently deletes recordings I have half watched. Even though it happens frequently, its difficult to replicate (I have done so, but can't replicate often enough to figure out at what point the recording is deleted). THis is not the normal problem with disappearing recordings - they don't come back again following a reset to defautls. Protected recordings don't get deleted, and it only seems to happen when disk space is less than 15% so it seems to be the auto-eraser - except I have it switched off because erasing programmes even when 15% space is left is in my opinion no help at all! Does anybody know what causes watched programmes to be deleted, and how I might stop it happening? I know I can protect programmes, but tend to forget to do so. I've noticed some recordings listed in the library are protected without me doing anything, but others are not protected. What causes a recording to be automatically be protected and how can I ensure the whole of a series of recordings are protected without having to protect each one individually once recorded? Perhaps this is a bug - ie everything should be protected by default, but some are not? |

Clearly Samsung don't give a crap about the problems this model suffers from, and their lack of communication is shocking, so I decided to contact FreeSat and see what they can do... Quote:
We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment. We have passed your details on to head office and will get back to you as soon as we have a response on this issue.
Many Thanks, The freesat team www.freesat.co.uk Tel: 08450 990 990 --- Your original question is below. Subject: Poor support from FreeSat hardware suppliers. Question: Hi, after moving from Sky, my biggest disappointment about Freesat is the lack of support from hardware suppliers. I have a Samsung SMT-S7800, which frequently loses all it's recordings. Samsung support keep on fobbing users off about a software fix that has so far taken over a year to arrive, and i'm at the end of my tether wit them. They have seemingly lost interest in the platform. I don't know how much clout you have, but if you can get an official statement out of Samsung regards their support of Freesat, I will know if it's worth carrying on waiting for a update thats really been canned but they are too afarid to tell us. I feel cheated enough by them already over their "G2 Ready" comments about this box, which eventually turned out to be nothing more than a stunt to sell equipment. Please Help. |

After a year of this nonsense I sent this to Samsung Support:
"I presume you are not in fact going to ever actually provide any software upgrades for this product. You keep assuring everyone who asks that there is an update on the way but it never appears. You should be ashamed that you can treat your customers in this way. It's time that you man up and admit that you have abandoned this Freesat box and stop stringing us customers along. It is not fit for purpose and it is a disgrace that you make any claim to producing quality products or supporting your customers. The ongoing need to reset to get access to recorded items with the resulting loss of all timers, the lack of ITV player - just two frustrations of many. No more Samsung products for me." I Got this in Reply: "Thank you for contacting Samsung. I am sorry to hear that you are having this issue and I apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause you. I can understand your frustration with this matter entirely. There is a firmware release currently being tested on our free sat boxes and this is to prepare the box for the ITV player Application. I thank you for your patience with this matter. If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help." So who knows. Always just enough to keep your hopes up. Drat. |

.. but crucially, no timescales...
Hopefully my email to the platform owner (Freesat) might result in Samsung manning up, but I somehow doubt it... I won't be purchasing any more Samsung products, nor Freesat prducts. |

Is that not a bit too severe - its a bit like saying I wont buy Sky anymore because once I had a Thompson box with a duff power supply.
. The Humax is much worse than the Samsung, and the others are no better either. FreeSat need to take more of an interest in the quality of Freesat equipment, if they want the platform to suceed. Clearly they don't give a crap, which is partly why Freesat uptake is so poor. |
